「汝、するなかれ……」

咳をするな。
くしゃみをするな。
ひそひそ話をするな。
遅れて来るな。
途中で帰るな。
飴の包み紙を開けるな。
携帯を見るな。
「間違った」ところで拍手するな。
そして、写真を撮った隣人には天罰を下すべし。
（いや、本当に。私は実際にやられたことがあります。）

何世紀もの間、音楽会の聴衆は、現代の私たちが「してはいけない」と教えられてきたことのほとんどを、当たり前のようにしていました。心を動かされれば拍手をし、友人と話し、歩き回り、食べたり飲んだり。コンサートは、厳粛な儀式というより、活気ある社交の場だったのです。

私たちは、昔に戻ろうとしているわけではありません。伝統を捨てようとしているわけでもありません。ただ、コンサートという体験は、これからも変わっていける――そう考えているのです。

素晴らしい音楽を、くつろぎながらも音楽に耳を澄ませられる、誰もが歓迎され、心を引き込まれるような空間で体験していただきたいと思います。

心を動かされたら、拍手をしてください。
おかしかったら、笑ってください。
好奇心をもって。
そして、その場、その瞬間を味わってください。

音楽は、きっと特別なものになるでしょう。
そして、その体験も。

Cough.
Sneeze.
Whisper.
Arrive late.
Leave early.
Unwrap a lolly.
Check thy phone.
Clap in the “wrong” place.
And thou shall smite thy neighbour for taking a photograph. (No, really. This happened to me.)

For centuries, audiences did almost everything today’s concertgoers have been taught not to do. They applauded when they were moved, chatted with friends, wandered about, ate, drank and treated concerts as lively social occasions rather than solemn rituals. We’re not turning back the clock, nor are we throwing tradition away. We’re simply recognising that the concert experience can continue to evolve.

We invite you to experience great music in atmospheres that are relaxed yet alert, welcoming and engaging. Applaud when you’re moved. Laugh when something is funny. Be curious. Be present.

The music will be extraordinary.
And so will the experience.
