“AVR is one of the few places that is prepared to take a risk and let you investigate a new area, look at something that no one else has looked at, and give you just that little bit of working research funding to let you try out your ideas”

Ongoing research is changing the reality of Glaucoma. Every scientific breakthrough contributes to earlier diagnosis, improved treatments and better patient outcomes.

Advancements in imaging, genetics, and neuroprotection are shaping the future of glaucoma care, helping to preserve vision and reduce the burden on healthcare systems worldwide. During World Glaucoma Week, we recognise the crucial role of vision research in preventing blindness for generations to come.

You can be part of the next breakthrough. Support Australian Vision Research.

The next generation of medicine-Gene therapy for glaucoma

Glaucoma is the most common cause of vision loss, and despite our best treatments many patients continue to progress.

Research team led by Dr Devaraj Basavarajappa identified a novel target protein sphingosine-1- phosphate receptor (S1PR) that plays a key role in glaucoma pathogenesis. Specific modulation of the S1PR1 will provide an innovative therapeutic target for the management of the disease.

Improving the prediction of glaucoma progression to prevent irreversible blindness

Investigators: Prof Jamie Craig and A/Prof Owen Siggs

Machine learning models can be used to predict future glaucoma risk and reveal new insights into the genetic architecture of optic nerve head parameters.

This research demonstrates potential applications of machine learning in understanding glaucoma risk, both as a decision support tool for predicting future conversion risk in glaucoma suspects, as well as a research tool for automated image labelling to empower large genetic association studies. Further work is underway to incorporate clinical, genomic, and imaging data into a multimodal glaucoma suspect prediction model.
