Today is World Autism Awareness Day, and the beginning of World Autism Awareness Month – a time to move beyond awareness and toward genuine inclusion.

The latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that around 290,900 people have been diagnosed with autism. Among children and young people, this represents a growing and important part of our community.

But numbers only tell part of the story.

Behind every statistic is an individual with strengths, perspectives, and contributions that enrich our workplaces, schools, and communities. While many people on the autism spectrum still experience barriers in areas like education, employment, healthcare, and community participation, there is also growing momentum toward change.

Throughout April, World Autism Awareness Month invites all of us to listen, learn, and take meaningful action to build a more inclusive society.

At Fighting Chance, we believe in creating better supports, building inclusive workplaces, and designing communities where neurodivergent people can truly thrive.

Because awareness is just the beginning.

Inclusion is what creates opportunity, connection, and meaningful change.

Fighting Chance co-founder Laura O’Reilly was recently featured on the radio segment Changing Australia, where she shared the story behind the creation of Fighting Chance and the vision that continues to drive our work today.

In the interview, Laura reflects on how her brother, Shane O’Reilly, who lived with profound Cerebral Palsy, inspired her and brother Jordan O’Reilly to think differently about what was possible for people with disability. After seeing the limited opportunities available, particularly once people leave school, they set out to build social businesses that could address these gaps and create genuine pathways for participation, connection and employment.

Laura also speaks about the progress that has been made in Australia in recent years, while acknowledging that there is still more to be done. She shares her hope that the impact of Fighting Chance and similar initiatives will continue to grow, both here and internationally, as we work towards a society where people with disability have the opportunity to fully participate and thrive.

Today we recognise the experiences, contributions and leadership of people with physical disability, and the importance of building a world that includes everyone.

Physical Disability Awareness Day is a reminder that disability is a common part of our community, yet many systems are still not designed with accessibility in mind. Despite this, people with physical disability continue to drive change, showing creativity, adaptability and leadership in the way they navigate the world and shape new possibilities.

At Fighting Chance, we are committed to removing barriers, centring lived experience and supporting people to build pathways that reflect their goals and strengths, not just today, but every day.

2025 has been a year of progress and achievement at Fighting Chance. We are grateful for the effort and dedication of our participants, staff, and families in making this year one of growth, confidence-building, and meaningful experiences.

This year we supported 1358 participants, across 18 locations in 5 states and territories. Jigsaw employed a total 137 people with disability, and supported 62 transitions into open employment. Avenue’s Newcastle Flyers Team broke its all-time monthly remuneration record, bringing in $10,665 in profit-share in October. Plus Clinical has grown to support over 100 clients across 95 suburbs of Sydney, and Base has continued to provide 24/7 supported independent living to 15 housemates via our unique shared governance model.
