No, this isnโ€™t a painting!

This is the exceptional winner of the 2025 Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year, a South Australian Museum exhibition.

Fractal Forest, was captured by Ross Gudgeon in Indonesia and shows the inside-out view of a cauliflower soft coral. ๐Ÿชธ

The coral is named for its characteristic appearance that resembles a cauliflower, with its bump-like polyps that give it a soft texture.

Ross managed to capture this perspective using a Nauticam EMWL, which is an underwater version of an insect eye lens.

A mind-boggling perspective that has you questioning realityโ€ฆ๐Ÿคฏ

Come and see it in person, alongside some other spectacular images of the world around us ๐Ÿ“ท

Tomorrow morning on ABC Sydney, Pete McGee from VIZ - Sydney Diving Visibility Reports will be chatting about facinating and venomous bluebottle. Do you know that bluebottles are actually a colony of more than one organism? And what to do if you get stung?

Tune in to 702 AM Radio at 6.15 AM to hear the Sydney Viz segment on the morning show and find out more...

Today has been Simon Marnie's last Weekend Mornings after continuous 25 (twenty-five) years. To surround him with love and gratitude, a crowd of hundreds of supporters showed up at Government House where he was live on air in a glorious, emotional and watery-eyed Summer morning.
He wandered through the crowd with the microphone for a last chat with each one of us he has crossed path with, remembering names and facts with razor precision. I knew I was in trouble the moment he started speaking in Italian coming my way, as I found myself overwhelmed by feelings and uttering nonsense in front of hundreds of eyes and thousands of ears.

I think that in every profession you can find inconceivable excellences that leave you in awe, and Simon today was just a perfect expression of that, delivering an impeccable and humour filled conversation in spite of the streams of tears crossing his cheeks, a view that I will never forget. For one more time he showed who's the Boss to ABC Radio who sacked him 7 days ago.
Arrivederci ragazzo!

Dear Friends, as some of you may have heard, Simon Marnie will no longer be at ABC Radio so today we wished him all the best with a walk through the memory lane. Simon, it has been a total pleasure to be chatting for 223 episodes of our radio segment of The Sydney Underwater Gazette and we look forward to hearing your mellow voice on some other frequency.
We are waiting to know from ABC if we will be invited to continue our volunteering contribution or not, stay tuned. ๐Ÿ™‚

Do you know how to spot a rip? Do you know what to do if you're caught in one?
Listen to Nyrie on ABC Radio Sydney (AM 702 at 6.15am) to learn about the science of surf and check out Dr Rip's website.
*Important spoiler*: If caught in a rip, just wait it out. You'll more likely float back to shore than get a free trip to New Zealand.

How did we get here

It has been an exciting journey, starting in June 2019 with the start of the VIZ - Sydney Diving Visibility Reports Facebook group, to fill the need for a central hub for sharing underwater visibility conditions. Itโ€™s one of the rare cases where different underwater enthusiasts come together under one roof: scuba divers, freedivers, spearos, snorkelers, instead of being dispersed across thematic groups.

In one year the group grew to 2800 members, thanks also to extending the scope beyond pure viz report sharing, through parallel activities launched in 2020: Turtle Tracking, Fish Tracking,VIZ Interviews, live talks on ABC Radio. As successful as these activities were, with our members inviting friends to join the group each time we published something interesting for them, we also realised that all that content was too much for a single page feed.

So on June 18th 2020 we decided to have a dedicated page, this one, to be the repository for any content we produce aimed to the wider community, publicly available, instead of keeping it confined to the VIZ group whose visibility is set to private.

Now the VIZ group is back to his core mission: post and find indications on visibility. Information entered there, in the form of visibility reports, is collected, analysed and presented on the Gazette in a summary format with the aid of easy to read graphs whenever possible.
