Great article on how eco-villages/co-operative housing is different from traditional housing.

From shared gardens and renewable energy to community rules, here’s what buyers need to know before buying or building in an eco-village.

Hannah Pearl is raising her children in an intentional community where residents share land, values and support one another. But she doesn't want to "rough it" like she did when she was growing up.

Do you think it would help those suffering because of the housing crisis IF councils accross Australia suspended local laws, and got out of the way, so people could live in tiny houses on wheels on private property in peace?

Then they collectively 'pulled up their sleeves' and set about advocating to state goverments that this is wanted and needed. It cannot actually take five years to effect these neccesary changes unless governments and councils DONT want to do it. They just want to look like they will, eventually.

In the article below 👇 it mentions a Toowoomba councillor promises council will 'pull every lever' they have available to them to change local laws around people living permanently in tiny homes on wheels.
Some years ago during our advocacy to our council, we heard the same declaration from senior executives in Sunshine Coast Council. Its even stated in writing somewhere in the hundreds of emails received from council over those years. It did not amount to any positive change. Quite the opposite.

While being cautiously pleased to see this review being undertaken by another Qld council, its difficult to feel the outcome will be any different.

Why?

Because over the years we have not wittnessed any genuine political will from council or state goverment to change these rules.

BUT the hope is there because this was a unanimous decision by ALL councillers.

Nothing will change unless and until the people in power feel the communities they serve will not tolerate this lack of positive decisive action any longer. To feel that, they need to hear that LOUDLY from those communities.

If you don't know what some, probably most councils can really be like 'behind the scenes' head over to our website .au and learn what a landowner can be put through trying to advocate for people living in tiny homes on wheels on her private property. The money wasted by council throughout this time is appalling. Imagine if instead of stalling, enforcing, harrassing and 'moving people on' those funds were used to effect the change needed in this ever deepening housing/ cost of living crisis.

Join the campaign.Whatever council region you live, start by emailing your local division councillor, mayor, CEO, state member and tell them we want change. Tell them if they needs years to sort out the mess they (and previous governments) have made have made with housing, then outdated local laws around living in a tiny home should be SUSPENDED until they get it done. People should not have to suffer because of outdated laws, and over complicated red tape.

Heres hoping that Toowoomba Council can lead the way. People choosing or having to live in alternative housing deserve housing security.

In the years of our advocacy work to get the local laws changed, we have sent several petitions with over 3000. signatures on them. Toowoomba Council is reviewing its laws after 1800 signatures. Come on, Sunshine Coast Council, why can't you review the local laws?

Here we go again. Takes us back to our campaign when Sunshine Coast Council decided to evict a family on a rural property. We have documented our campaign on our website, and it saddens us that all our efforts have amounted to no change.

The whole tiny homes on wheels community needs to stand together and fight for change. The time for hiding and hoping they don't get a neighbour complaint is over. You are doing nothing wrong, and the rules NEED to change.

Holly says she has been threatened with fees from the council because she lives in a tiny home.

Toowoomba Council. So pleased to hear they accepted the community petition.
Tiny Community Living presented Sunshine Coast Council with our similar petition to be tabled at the last Ordinary meeting of 2025 with 1900+ signatures...asking for change in rules around Tiny Houses. It was presented at the Ordinary Meeting BUT there was only half of the signatures. Two lead petitioners petitions were left out, presumably left in a rubbish bin somewhere in the Tower of Power!
The Division councillor handling this, was going to follow up & find out what happened, but nothing was heard about our petition again.🤷‍♀️ Nothing at all!

Heres hoping that Toowoomba Council can show sunnie coast the way! 🤞🤞🤞

The pilot was “a first in NSW” and had been “over two years in the making” as part of a broader response to housing pressures. Needs State approval before it starts.

We asked for this a couple of years ago, and still nothing. Maybe other councils acting might help us move closer to change nationwide.

Planning changes needed to bring the Tiny Homes Pilot Program into effect in Shellharbour have finally been adopted, as the…

Bellingen Shire councillors voted to progress plans to sell the Ferry Street lot, valued at $750,000 to the Waterfall Way Community Land Trust (WWCLT), a not-for-profit that owns and manages land to support community needs.

WWCLT executive officer, Kerry Pearse says the 2,000m2 lot could create up to seven new affordable homes, offering a co-ownership model for people on local incomes, where the land is held in trust and residents own the home structure.
