⏰ URGENT Deadline TODAY: have your say on Australia's housing future!

The Productivity Commission is finalising its housing supply report, and submissions on its interim findings close today, 30 September.

Its draft report focuses on cities, but we couldn't find anything on:
🏡 Tiny homes on wheels
🤝 Cooperative housing
🌾 Allowing more than one dwelling on rural land

These are affordable homes that need no public funding and, with off-grid power and water, no new infrastructure.

We've lodged our submission, and you can use it as a template for your own. Even a short comment about your own experience counts. The Commission has said it wants real stories and examples.

We love seeing out-of-the-box housing solutions. What if a village was designed around community and nature?

In Oosterwold, a community is bringing together 82 homes in eight gently curved longhouses across seven hectares.

The village is car-free, energy-neutral and bio-based, with green roofs, shared gardens, orchards, waterways and 1,150 m² of food forest.

Around 130 adults and 50 children now live in a community where residents share responsibility for the landscape and common spaces.

QUEENSLANDERS, we are being asked to have our say on a major overhaul of the State Planning Policy (SPP) — the document that sets the rules for how and where development happens across the state.

The State Government wants to ensure the SPP can respond to population growth and housing needs, make the planning system clearer, and support infrastructure and economic growth across the state.

Proposed changes include a stronger focus on increasing housing supply and encouraging higher-density development around centres and transport corridors, while also changing how issues such as the environment, heritage, coastal areas, and natural hazards are considered.

The SPP filters down into local planning schemes and shapes how our communities grow. So NOW is the time to let them know we want housing cooperatives and tiny homes on wheels as part of the housing mix.

Do you think it would help those suffering because of the housing crisis IF councils accross Australia suspended local laws, and got out of the way, so people could live in tiny houses on wheels on private property in peace?

Then they collectively 'pulled up their sleeves' and set about advocating to state goverments that this is wanted and needed. It cannot actually take five years to effect these neccesary changes unless governments and councils DONT want to do it. They just want to look like they will, eventually.

In the article below 👇 it mentions a Toowoomba councillor promises council will 'pull every lever' they have available to them to change local laws around people living permanently in tiny homes on wheels.
Some years ago during our advocacy to our council, we heard the same declaration from senior executives in Sunshine Coast Council. Its even stated in writing somewhere in the hundreds of emails received from council over those years. It did not amount to any positive change. Quite the opposite.

While being cautiously pleased to see this review being undertaken by another Qld council, its difficult to feel the outcome will be any different.

Why?

Because over the years we have not wittnessed any genuine political will from council or state goverment to change these rules.

BUT the hope is there because this was a unanimous decision by ALL councillers.

Nothing will change unless and until the people in power feel the communities they serve will not tolerate this lack of positive decisive action any longer. To feel that, they need to hear that LOUDLY from those communities.

If you don't know what some, probably most councils can really be like 'behind the scenes' head over to our website .au and learn what a landowner can be put through trying to advocate for people living in tiny homes on wheels on her private property. The money wasted by council throughout this time is appalling. Imagine if instead of stalling, enforcing, harrassing and 'moving people on' those funds were used to effect the change needed in this ever deepening housing/ cost of living crisis.

Join the campaign.Whatever council region you live, start by emailing your local division councillor, mayor, CEO, state member and tell them we want change. Tell them if they needs years to sort out the mess they (and previous governments) have made have made with housing, then outdated local laws around living in a tiny home should be SUSPENDED until they get it done. People should not have to suffer because of outdated laws, and over complicated red tape.

Heres hoping that Toowoomba Council can lead the way. People choosing or having to live in alternative housing deserve housing security.
