Kawana Waters Surf Life Saving Club

Kawana Waters Surf Life Saving Club Kawana Waters Surf Life Saving Club is centrally located on the picturesque Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. We have hosted some major carnivals e.g.

The idea of a surf club at Kawana was first raised when the Kawana Apex Club was looking for a service project in 1980. Several tragic drownings had occurred in the area and when it was discovered that 6 or so Apexians held Bronze Medallions and had been in surf clubs before, a common goal was forged and on 12.9.80 the club was formed. Many years of hard work followed with a patrol shed (built by

volunteer labour and bricks collected from building sites in the area, with permission of course), and then a club house (built through a loan from the Commonwealth Bank at Kawana) being opened on 21.11.82. It was a remarkable achievement and the club grew in strength, and by the 10th anniversary, had repaid the original loan of $99,000 (with 10 personal guarantors of the loan heaving a sigh of relief). Since then, several small additions (boat shed, radio room, BBQ area etc) were added with membership levels growing and falling over the years. The last big extension to the club (new kitchen, training room and outdoor area), done in 1996, saw a big growth in our Supporters Club as well as our Surf Club. We have done a refurbishment (including a new craft shed), put in a new bar, and changed the position of the gaming room, and are looking forward to the next extension / renovation of the Supporters Club area. Our growth seems to go in cycles and over the last few years, have maintained over 160 active patrolling members, and well over 100 nippers and over 2000 supporters. Kawana Waters has had many successes in competition over the years, producing several State Champions in boats, beach, IRB and more recently, Ironman and other open carnival events. Our competitive profile was lifted with the addition of Zane Holmes and his family to our club, and we regularly achieved top 10 in State and National titles, and went on to win the World Titles held in Lorne, Australia in 2006. Although Zane has moved back to the Gold Coast to further his business career, we still boast champions amongst our ranks, including some talented Masters and some young guys coming up through the ranks. State IRB titles in 1996, National IRB titles in June 2000, and have held the State Titles here in 2007 and 2009 with more to come. The 2009 National IRB Titles are again being hosted by our club as we’ve proved we have the best position, the area and the workforce to pull off a successful carnival. Now after 40 years of operations, Kawana Waters Surf Club has become a great social venue and community facility,a great family club, as well as providing an award-winning quality of safety for the beach going public of this growing area of the Sunshine Coast.

Behind the Red & Yellow at KWSLSC | Patrol Captain Edition 🚩

Another month, another legend. This month, we’re shining the spotlight on Patrol Captain – Amanda Pont. Let’s get to know Amanda and hear more about her lifesaving journey....

1. How long have you been part of KWSLSC? I have been an active member since 2009, so 17 years.

2. What do you enjoy most about being a Patrol Captain? I love being part of a team, supporting and guiding patrol members, keeping people safe. I enjoy our team and the friendships and trust that comes with patrolling with the same crew.

3. Favourite or most memorable patrol moment? I love the days when we can all get in the water for a team body bash.

4. Fun facts........ Myself and Jason Lenski , set up the Yourth Camp back in the day when our kids were nippers.

5. Advice for new members, youth cadets & nippers...... Being a Surf Life Saving is a privilege, especially knowing we’re often the first responders in an ocean rescue. I really value leading a team in those moments, working together under pressure, and being able to make a genuine difference to someone’s safety. The responsibility, teamwork, and community aspect are what I enjoy most.. I’d encourage new members and nippers to give everything a go and not be afraid to step outside their comfort zone. Ask questions, learn from your patrol, and build strong relationships—it’s a team environment. Respect the ocean, stay aware, and remember that every skill you learn could one day help save a life.”

Friday Flashback | BOATIES SLSC Boaties
Proudly sponsored by our Friday & Sunday Raffle sponsors

"MET Caloundra Craft Carnival, October 1997, Girls boat team captained by Gary Hume. The Boat name - it's probably fair to say it reflects a different era! Anyone who spent time on the boat carnival circuit back then will remember the creative (and sometimes questionable) names that were all part of the fun"

If you were once a KWSLSC boatie and are keen for the catch up and/ OR you have some boatie photos at home - please DM us.

We’re also incredibly grateful for the ongoing support of our sponsors. Quite simply, we couldn’t do what we do without them. This week, we’re proud to recognise all our regular raffle sponsors who week after week kindly donate items and gift vouchers for raffles.

Stay tuned each Friday as we continue to shine a spotlight on the people and partners who make our club what it is - you might even spot a familiar face!

"Continuing on the theme from last week, we’ve dug up some boatie shots from one of our earliest events - the Kawana Carnival of Champions, which ran from 1981 through to at least 1988.

As you would think - when surf boats raced at Kawana, it was always eventful… and possibly part of the reason we don’t hold events here anymore! Make sure you flick through to the last photo"

The Kawana Carnival of Champions was a landmark event in Australian surf lifesaving. With an impressive $10,000 in prize money on offer, it became the largest single-sponsored surf carnival of its time, drawing elite surf lifesaving talent from across the country. Sponsored by Kawana Estates, the event regularly attracted crowds of more than 5,000 spectators, firmly placing Kawana Waters Surf Life Saving Club on the national map and setting a high-water mark in the club’s proud history.

Behind the Red & Yellow at KWSLSC | Patrol Captain Edition 🚩

This month, we’re shining the spotlight on Patrol Captain – Laura Turner. Let’s get to know Laura and hear more about her lifesaving journey....

1. How long have you been part of KWSLSC and what made you join?
I have been a member for 9 years. I finished my studies, moved to the Sunshine Coast and decided to set myself a new challenge by completing my bronze.

2. What do you enjoy most about being a Patrol Captain?
My team. Every patrol is filled with banter and laughter.

3. Favourite or most memorable patrol moment?
There are so many memorable moments. There are “serious” memories, included a mass rescue of young boys completed successful with a very small team, to the more hilarious memory of “dog patrol” who stopped to explain their very serious role on the beach.

4. Fun facts:
I have had over 17 bone fractures in my lifetime (I’ve lost count now).

5. Advice for new members, youth cadets & nippers:
Give everything a go. Get involved in as much as you can (Declan it’s not too late).

SPONSOR THANK YOU | HI - AMP ELECTRICAL

Recently, when our GOLD sponosr - Hi- Amp Electrical saw two of our Youth members competing at the Aussies, they kindly put together special congratulatory packs for them - including a Surf Life Saving Australia backpack and a personalised engraved YETI water bottle. It’s gestures like this that really show what being part of a strong club community is all about. Your continued support, encouragement, and generosity mean so much to our athletes and families.

Thank you again Hi- Amp Electrical for always backing our members and helping celebrate their achievements both in and out of the water.
