On Wednesday night, our community gathered to say farewell to Sub Tropic Studio.

Together, we celebrated the legacy of a space that has shaped our creative landscape since 2019, a studio that has welcomed artists-in-residence, hosted countless workshops, events and even silent discos, and served as a home base for imagination, collaboration and connection.

The night brought past and present together as we heard reflections from founding advocates Phil Smith and Megan Rowland, reconnected with former residents, and enjoyed live music by The Band of Legends alongside a special project preview from Kerbside Collective.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in raising a glass to this retro-styled haven in the bus station, a place where big dreams were born and creative community thrived.

Here’s to the legacy of Sub Tropic, and to the continued spirit of making space for artists on the Sunshine Coast.

TOMORROW NIGHT

Departure Lounge: A Farewell to Sub Tropic

Sub Tropic is to close its doors soon and we invite you to join SCCA as we farewell this beloved space with a last hurrah!

Launched in 2019, Sub Tropic Studio was a bold and much-needed initiative in the region. Over the years, it has hosted artists-in-residence, workshops, events, silent discos and been a creative co-working space and SCCA’s HQ. It has been a welcoming haven for artists, creative entrepreneurs and the arts-curious community who have all made memories in the retro-styled interiors of Banjo Beale.

This end-of-an-era event will celebrate the legacy of what can be achieved when the artistic community gets together to dream big and advocate for creative space for artists.

Gather with the creative community, meet previous artists-in-residence and hear reflections from the founding advocates, SCCA President Phil Smith and Sunshine Coast Council Sector Development Lead, Megan Rowland. Enjoy live music by the Band of Legends and a new project preview by Kerbside Collective.

Let’s get together to raise a glass (or two) to the studio in the bus station one last time.

The race to 2032 is on!

💪 Just like athletes, artists need training. Donate to SCCA on AusArt Day and help our creatives reach the starting line.

SCCA (Sunshine Coast Creative Alliance) is building a thriving arts ecosystem by equipping artists, makers and creative entrepreneurs with the tools, networks and professional development needed to succeed on a global stage.

Funds raised through our BRING IT campaign will open doors to mentorship, skills development and transformative residency opportunities, preparing Sunshine Coast artists to thrive and shine as we head toward the 2032 Cultural Olympiad.

Getting an athlete to the Games takes a dedicated team of coaches and champions. Artists need that same support and SCCA is that team.

Why donate to BRING IT?

Our artists deserve the same support and training that athletes receive on their road to greatness 🎨🔥

SCCA has launched its BRING IT fundraising campaign for AusArt Day (Thursday 23 October), and we’re calling on our community to help get our creatives to the starting line.

SCCA is building a thriving arts ecosystem on the Sunshine Coast. Through The Refinery, we provide artists, makers and creative entrepreneurs with the mentorship, skills development, networks and residency opportunities they need to thrive here at home and on the global stage.

With the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games approaching, our region has the chance to shine on an international platform. Just like athletes preparing for their moment, our artists need training, resources and a dedicated support team behind them.

That’s where you come in.

Be part of the support crew. Donations over $2 are tax deductible.

BRING IT will directly support local creatives through long-term development programs that lead to real impact, sustainable careers, and a lasting cultural legacy.

🎨🏅 Meet our Campaign Ambassador: Alison Mooney!

Alison is an Australian artist who began sharing her experimental and intuitive practice in the early 2000s.

She’s developed a distinctive visual language marked by bold layering, digital collage, cross-disciplinary collaborations, and public art, work that’s found a home in collections from Facebook HQ (San Francisco) to the Sunshine Coast Art Collection.

🏃🏻‍♀️‍➡️ Having laced up before as an Alumni of The Refinery’s creative incubator, Alison knows what it takes to train, push boundaries, and go the distance in the arts.

From city murals in Hamilton, Port Phillip, and the Sunshine Coast to self-driven studio projects, Alison proves that creativity is a marathon, not a sprint, and she’s here to cheer on our artists as SCCA asks YOU to BRING IT this AusArt Day.

💡 Fun fact: Alison is also an all-round funny gal, we promise the puns are just the warm-up!

Join Alison and back our creatives on AusArt Day.
