Meet Martin Kenny, Youth Nippers Coach at Alexandra Headland Surf Lifesaving Club!

With around 50 years of involvement in surf sports, Martin brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the next generation of athletes at Alex.

Having coached ski athletes at the Club since 2017, Martin has recently stepped into the role of Youth Nippers Coach, continuing his passion for developing young talent.

One of his proudest moments in the sport was winning an Australian gold medal in the ski relay, an achievement that still holds a special place in his heart.

For Martin, coaching is about more than just results. Drawing on both the highs and lows of his own sporting journey, he understands the importance of being there for his athletes, celebrating their successes and supporting them through the challenges along the way.

Our Seahorse Nippers program offers fully supported beach sessions for children aged 7–15 living with a disability, creating a fun, inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone to enjoy.

HAYDEN KENNY OAM | LIFE MEMBER #19

Ironman champion, life saving pioneer and surfboard innovator - Hayden Kenny’s contribution to Alexandra Headland and Australian surf life saving spans generations.

Australia’s inaugural national Ironman champion in 1966, Hayden also helped introduce new rescue techniques and equipment to Australian beaches. He played a pivotal role in establishing the Sunshine Coast Surf Life Saving Rescue Helicopter Service in 1979, helping secure funding for what became Australia’s first surf lifesaving rescue service of its kind.

With decades of significant service to Alex and the wider community, Hayden’s legacy reaches far beyond the competition arena.

Meet Chloe Rounds, U11–U12 Beach Coach at Alex Surf Club 🌊

At just 17, Chloe is already into her second year of coaching at Alex, after spending the past six years in surf sports herself.

From beach flags and sprints to relays, Chloe is all about giving our young athletes a fun introduction to beach events and helping them build confidence, skills and a strong connection with their teammates.

For Chloe, coaching is about keeping things fun while encouraging the kids to work hard, give everything a go and learn from their mistakes along the way.

It’s all about creating a great experience for the next generation and continuing to grow the beach community here at Alex. 💛🖤

Meet Jamo Porter, Ski Coach and Assistant Coach at Alex Surf Club.

Jamo has been involved in surf sports since he was just seven years old, with 27 years in the sport and eight years of coaching experience behind him.

While he’s had plenty of memorable moments throughout his surf sports career, some of his biggest highlights have come through coaching, including being part of both the coaching and winning team when Alex took home a Taplin Relay win.

For Jamo, good coaching isn’t about simply telling athletes what to do. It’s about helping them understand the ‘why’, guiding them in the right direction and giving them the tools to make those decisions for themselves.

Known for keeping his cool, Jamo is passionate about supporting his athletes both on and off the beach and helping them get the best out of themselves. 💛🖤

Meet our Beach Coach, Murdoch Finch.

After being in surf sports for 22 years, Murdoch brings plenty of experience to the sand at Alex. Originally from New Zealand, he crossed the ditch in 2014. Murdoch has represented NZ in multiple international events. 🌏

After taking a short break from the sport, Murdoch found his way back through coaching and he’s now heading into his fourth season coaching at Alex Surf Club.
With a coaching philosophy that nothing comes easy, Murdoch knows what it takes to get the best out of our beach athletes, helping the next generation work hard, build confidence and reach their potential.

We’re excited to see what this season brings. Big things ahead!
