Last night, Sunbury & Macedon Ranges Toastmasters members Darryl O'reilly, Paul Marshall and Paulette Marshall had the pleasure of attending the 2388th meeting at the Ball Court Hotel of the Rotary Club of Sunbury Australia.

Darryl, our member and outgoing President, was invited as guest speaker for the evening.

It was a wonderful night of community connection, conversation and shared purpose, and a lovely opportunity to get to know several of the Rotarians and hear more about the important work Rotary does in the Sunbury community.

Darryl spoke about his Toastmasters journey, what Toastmasters is about, and the many similarities between Rotary and Toastmasters. Rotary Club of Sunbury began in 1973 and has now reached around Meeting 2388, while Sunbury & Macedon Ranges Toastmasters recently celebrated our 1000th meeting.

Both clubs have a proud history of service, leadership, fellowship, encouragement and helping people grow.

One of the highlights of the evening was when Darryl invited Paul, a newly inducted Rotary member, to take part in a one-minute Table Topic.

Darryl then gave Paul a short evaluation and some supportive feedback, just as we do at Toastmasters. He encouraged him to relax, slow down, keep his arms by his side, and notice filler words such as “um” and “ah”.

After receiving that feedback, Paul then stood up again and shared his own story about public speaking. He spoke about his first experience when he worked in a bank and was sent to public speaking training, and how he later spoke at a union rally in front of around 3,000 people.

This time, Paul spoke for over three and a half minutes with more confidence, ease and natural hand gestures. It was a wonderful reminder of how even a small amount of supportive feedback can help someone grow.

That is what Toastmasters is all about — building confidence, communication and leadership skills in a safe and encouraging environment.

We also enjoyed hearing more about the important work Rotary does in the Sunbury community, including supporting young people through the Rotary Sail Training Challenge. This program helps 15 to 18 year olds build life skills, confidence and friendships through a sailing experience.

There was also great interest in WynSpeak and how Rotary and Toastmasters may be able to work together to support public speaking opportunities for young people across the Sunbury area, including local high schools.

This connection began when Paul and Paulette attended Rotary’s Lift the Lid Walk for Mental Health in February. From that community event, conversations continued, and Merv later attended our Sunbury 1000 celebration. It was lovely to now continue that connection at Rotary.

Darryl brought the evening back to one simple but powerful message: helping one person. You never know how your story, encouragement or willingness to speak may help someone else.

He also shared his smiley face balls, badges and his 15 words:

“The Spirit Of Life Is When You Give And Share Your Spirit To Another Life.”

A special moment of the night was when Darryl gifted a pen to Merv, to be passed on to each Rotary President as a symbol of writing, leading and helping others.

Merv also kindly gifted Rotary mugs to Darryl, Paul Marshall and Paulette, which was such a thoughtful gesture and a lovely reminder of the evening.

Sunbury & Macedon Ranges Toastmasters looks forward to continuing this connection with the Rotary Club of Sunbury and exploring ways we can work together in the community — supporting youth, encouraging people who may be struggling, helping people build confidence, and creating more opportunities for people to speak, lead and grow.

Community is stronger when we work together.

Finding Joy at Sunbury & Macedon Ranges Toastmasters ✨

What a wonderful night we had at Meeting 1005.
We had amazing guests, returning guests, younger guests, speeches, creative Table Topics, awards, a special thank you, and our 2026–2027 Club Elections.

Our Word of the Day was Mudita, presented by Susan. Mudita means finding joy in another person’s joy — and it was extra special because we also have a member named Mudita, making the word feel even more fitting for the night.

We were delighted to welcome visiting Toastmaster Matt from Nillumbik Toastmasters, who now lives in Kyneton. Matt delivered a fantastic educational speech on evaluation and feedback and later gave us a helpful General Evaluation.

Julie delivered “Happiness – How to Find the Hidden Gem,” and Paul created brilliant Table Topics questions that had everyone thinking outside the box — desert islands, alien abductions, Antarctica, COVID leadership, the moon, and even a night stuck in a zoo!

One of our younger guests, only 12, got up and gave an amazing Table Topic about his night stuck in a zoo. Another younger guest, only 15, took on the Harkmaster role and managed to stump everyone with the final question.

A big congratulations to Cassy, one of our newest members, who had a double whammy, winning both Best Table Topics and Best Evaluator. What a start!

We also thanked outgoing President Darryl, who congratulated our new committee and closed the meeting — not only as the close of the night, but also as his final meeting close as outgoing President.

A bittersweet and exciting night full of joy, encouragement, courage and community.

Now we look forward to our next meeting, where Paul will officiate his first meeting as our new President.

Next meeting:
Tuesday 15 June
6:45 pm – 9:00 pm

What a wonderful night we had at Sunbury & Macedon Ranges Toastmasters for Meeting 1005, with the theme “Finding Joy.”

The room was full of encouragement, laughter, amazing guests, returning guests, younger guests, members stepping up, and plenty of very special moments.

The evening began with Darryl giving a heartfelt thank you to the three members, plus himself, who helped organise our Sunbury 1000 meeting celebrations in April. He acknowledged the work that went into such an important milestone for our club and presented a lovely gift of appreciation.

Raj then took over as Toastmaster and led us through a warm and lively meeting.

Our Word of the Day was Mudita, presented by Susan. Mudita means finding joy in another person’s joy, which fitted perfectly with our theme. It was also a lovely coincidence, as we have a member named Mudita, making the word feel even more meaningful on the night.
Another important word for the evening was Encouragement, and that truly summed up the feeling in the room.

We were also delighted to welcome visiting Toastmaster Matt from Nillumbik Toastmasters, who now lives in Kyneton. Matt stepped in and delivered a fantastic educational speech on evaluation and feedback, and later gave us a very helpful General Evaluation.
Julie delivered her prepared speech, “Happiness – How to Find the Hidden Gem,” encouraging us to notice the joy and happiness already around us.

Paul created some fantastic Table Topics questions that really had everyone thinking outside the box — from being stuck on a desert island, experiencing an alien abduction, being Premier of Victoria during COVID, spending 24 months in Antarctica, being the first person on the moon, and imagining a night stuck in a zoo.

We also had a few younger guests attend — children of members or guests who came along to see what Toastmasters is all about. One of our younger guests, only 12 years old, got up for Table Topics and did an amazing job telling us about his night stuck in a zoo. Another younger guest, only 15, took on the Harkmaster role and asked questions about what happened during the meeting — brilliantly stumping everyone with the final question!

A huge congratulations to Cassy, one of our newest members, who had a double whammy on the night, winning both Best Table Topics and Best Evaluator. Not bad at all for one of our newest members — what a fantastic start to her Toastmasters journey!

We also held our 2026–2027 Club Elections and welcomed our incoming committee:

President: Paul
Vice President Education: Paulette
Vice President Public Relations: Paulette
Vice President Membership: Ros
Treasurer: Andrew
Secretary: Susan
Sergeant at Arms: Gillian

Darryl then congratulated the new committee and closed the meeting. This was more than just closing Meeting 1005 — it was also his final meeting close as outgoing President. A bittersweet moment, but one filled with gratitude, pride and excitement for what is ahead.

Now we look forward to our next meeting, where Paul will officiate his first meeting as our new President.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday 15 June, 6:45 pm to 9:00 pm.

Our Toastmaster for the evening will be Julie, with the theme:

“The Car Is To Blame For Everything”

Julie says:

“With this theme of the night, I want us to start thinking outside the box and start re-thinking what we think we already know… Buckle up and prepare for a fun night!”

Guests are always welcome. You do not need to be confident to start — you just need to be willing to have a go.

Just to clarify for anyone wondering — Sunbury & Macedon Ranges Toastmasters is not a seniors-only group.

We meet at the Sunbury Seniors Hub, but that is simply our meeting venue.

Toastmasters is open to a wide range of people and ages.

To become a member of Toastmasters, you need to be 18 years or over, but younger people/teenagers are also welcome to come along as guests and see what it is all about.

One of the wonderful things about Toastmasters is the mix of people, life experience and backgrounds. Across Toastmasters International, there are members of many ages — including people well into their 90s — still learning, growing, speaking, listening and encouraging others.

Last week was such a fun meeting, with lots of laughs, encouragement and great connection.
We were thrilled to welcome guests who came along for the first time, really enjoyed the night, and will be joining us again.

Toastmasters is about so much more than public speaking. It is about community, meeting new people, supporting each other, listening, learning, building confidence and encouraging one another to become better — not just as speakers, but as communicators, leaders and people.

Whether you want to improve your confidence, learn to think on your feet, become a better listener, build leadership skills, or simply meet a friendly and supportive group of people, Toastmasters is a wonderful place to start.

We will also be holding our committee elections towards the end of the meeting, as we look ahead to another exciting year for our club.

Guests are always welcome, and it is free to come along and visit.

We would love to see you there.
