🎨 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | ALISON HEIN 🎨

Meet Alison Hein — a wonderfully creative maker with a talent for seeing the potential in the ordinary, the forgotten and the unwanted. Her work reflects a love of repurposing, mixed materials and bringing imaginative ideas to life, often creating something entirely unexpected from what was once something else. ♻️✨

Swipe ➡️ to read more from Ali!

Alison’s creativity started at a young age, inspired by her grandmother who introduced her to all kinds of crafts and encouraged her to enter local and surrounding shows.

“She loved to repurpose things, and I definitely inherited that from her! I see a project in almost everything, which can sometimes be a bit of a problem because I don’t think I will ever have enough time to make all the things I imagine!” 😂

For Alison, there’s something special about taking an idea and physically bringing it to life — especially when that means transforming something old or ordinary into something completely different.

She also loves the diversity of ArtsUp, seeing the amazing and varied creations of other artists and makers and celebrating the fact that everyone has their own style and their own way of seeing things.

Her advice to anyone thinking about entering?

Just give it a go! ❤️

“I truly believe everyone can do art because we all see things differently. There is no right or wrong way to be creative. Don’t worry about whether your work is ‘good enough’ — just enjoy the process and have fun with it.”

And Alison has a special message for the younger generation too — encourage your kids to be creative. Creativity can be so important for confidence, wellbeing and happiness.

“Give it a go — it’s good for the soul, and you might just surprise yourself with what you can create!” ❤️

We couldn’t agree more, Alison! We can’t wait to see what she has created for this year’s ArtsUp Exhibition. 🌿🎨

🎨 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | art_bylysh 🎨

Meet Lysh (art_bylysh) — a contemporary artist with a bold and vibrant style that brings people, personality and a little bit of cheekiness to the canvas. Her work features strong figurative compositions, expressive characters and striking blocks of colour, creating pieces that feel fun, confident and full of life. ✨

For Lysh, being part of the Streaky Bay ArtsUp Exhibition is about more than simply displaying her work. It’s an opportunity to share her creativity with the community, connect with other local artists and have something to work towards that keeps her creating and exploring new ideas.

“I really enjoy the community aspect of the exhibition and the opportunity to connect with other local artists and people who appreciate art.”

Her advice to anyone thinking about entering?

Be prepared! 😂
“So you’re not completing a work the night before the entries close like I did last year!”

And don’t be afraid to ask for help or advice from other creatives. Lysh still turns to her high school art teacher when she gets stuck — particularly with colour schemes — proving that sometimes the best creative advice comes from someone who knows your work well. ❤️

We can’t wait to see what art_bylysh brings to this year’s exhibition!

🎨 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | FREW (Frew-ann Halbert)

We love hearing from the artists who make the ArtsUp Exhibition what it is — and Frew shares a beautiful reminder of why local exhibitions matter. ❤️

Why do you enter?
“I love to support local exhibitions when I have time to create something. We have such talented artists on the Eyre Peninsula and the quality and variety of work always makes for a great annual exhibition.”

LocalArt HaveAGo

✨ Favourite part?
“Opening night is always fabulous! Exhibitions are inspiring for artists as well as an opportunity to showcase your work. I also really enjoy volunteering to have the exhibition open when it is in my local community. It’s lovely to meet tourists and talk about the artists and their work.”

🌿 Advice for first-time entrants?
“Every artist has their own unique style. Your work will appeal to the right person and may inspire someone else to enter one day.”

And we couldn’t agree more! Your work doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s — your unique style is exactly what makes an exhibition interesting.

So, if you’ve been thinking about entering this year… take the leap and have a go! 🎨

🎨 MEET OUR NEXT ARTIST — TONI!

This next artist is so much more than just an artist. She’s one of the amazing ladies behind the scenes of the ArtsUp Exhibition, the lady behind the bar, the modest over-achiever, and the person who somehow gets the job done before the rest of us have even realised it needs doing! 😂

She’s one of those people who quietly gets things happening, always ready to lend a hand and somehow manages to make it all look effortless.

We’re so lucky to have her as part of the ArtsUp family. 💛

So, let’s hear from Toni about why she enters, what she loves about the exhibition, and the advice she’d give to anyone thinking about taking the leap for the first time…SWIPE TO READ MORE ➡️

🎨 WHY DO I ENTER? — TONI

“I’ve always loved creating, but it wasn’t until I became involved with ArtsUp that I gained the confidence — and maybe the little (BIG!) push — I needed to enter my first exhibition in 2016.

For me, it’s never been about being the best artist or winning a prize. It’s about having the confidence to put something I’ve created out there, have a go, and be part of all the excitement that comes with the ArtsUp Exhibition.

After 9 years of entering, my confidence grew enough to take another BIG leap — holding my very first solo exhibition earlier this year. Something I’m not sure I ever would have had the confidence to do without the support of ArtsUp.

And who knows where that first step might lead? 💛

🎨 WHAT’S MY FAVOURITE PART? — TONI

“I’m lucky enough to be part of hanging the exhibition each year, and I absolutely love watching it all come together.

There’s so much more to it than simply hanging artwork on a wall. ArtsUp thinks about colour, subject, size, style and how each piece works alongside the others.

I also love seeing just how unique the ArtsUp Exhibition is each year. There is always such an amazing mix of styles, ideas and creativity — and no two exhibitions are ever the same.

That’s what makes it so exciting to be part of! ✨

🎨 WHY I ENTER ART PRIZES

We asked local artist Emma Williams Streaky Bay Artist why she enters art prizes, what she loves most about them, and what advice she’d give to someone entering for the first time.

Her answer is a great reminder that entering is about so much more than winning. 💛

✨ Why enter?
“Art prizes are an excellent way of getting your art practice out there. You may sell a piece, someone may approach you for a commission, another exhibition opportunity may come from entering, and you’ll be meeting and mixing with other artists and making great connections with like-minded people.”

🖌️ Favourite part?
“I love seeing all the pieces, how creative people are, what everyone has been working on, and any new techniques or skills people are learning or working with.”

🚧 And the images?
Emma describes these as “Gouache studies — lots of new pieces under construction 🚧😆”

We love getting a little glimpse into the creative process — because not every artwork starts as a finished masterpiece. Sometimes it starts with experimenting, learning, playing with ideas and seeing where they take you.

💛 Entering for the first time?
“Don’t be shy! And don’t be disappointed if you don’t win a prize first up. It’s about gaining confidence in your practice and getting your work out there.

Judging is subjective, and one person’s opinion doesn’t define your artwork. Sometimes it simply takes a little luck on the day.

So enter your work, have fun creating along the way ”

Thank you Emma Williams Streaky Bay Artist for sharing your work and your advice. 🎨
