Dandenong Ranges Trip
Dandenong Botanic Garden, Olinda

On October 28th, nine members of the Rhododendron Society SA met with the Victorian Branch of the Australian Rhododendron Society (Victorian Branch) at the Dandenong Botanic Gardens, Olinda.
Our members were given great insight into what the volunteers do at the Garden each Tuesday, as well as a good understanding of its history, by John O Hara, the current Vice President.
The tour of the propagation facilities and shade houses that constitute the Nursery was fantastic. It shows what can be achieved with a dedicated cadre of 15 volunteers working one day a week.

October is pay-off time for Rhododendron and Azalea growers. Our members bring blooms from their gardens to show at our October meeting. It's a humble-brag situation – and why not? They are so beautiful! Some members share an astounding amount of knowledge, while some ask what variety they have. Somebody will have the answer.

The blooms pictured here are about 20% of what was presented. They were left behind and found a home on the kitchen windowsill.

Behold this magnificent Rhododendron Magniflorum specimen, grown by Rob Hatcher at his Algate garden, has finally revealed its flower. Large and with a slight fragrance, it has been worth the 8-year wait.

These images depict two distinct types of buds: one from a Rhododendron magniflorum flower bud and the other from a foliage bud. Notably, the flower bud is more robust. This species is extremely rare in cultivation, and I have had the privilege of cultivating it for eight years. The seed was sourced from the wild in Szechuan, China, and distributed by the RCM group of the RHS. I acquired my plant from Emu Valley Rhododendron garden.
