Last night I caught part of a segment on Fox about the staff philosophy within Chick-fil-A. Being an Australian, I had never heard of the franchise and I do not wish to comment on any controversies surrounding it. One thing the spokeswoman for the company said is worth repeating. She drew a distinction in customer service between being nice and being kind. Being nice is so other people like you. Being kind is about liking other people. I think her point was that staff are expected to be kind and not just nice. It was matched with an expectation of telling the truth. So I guess staff are also kindly told the truth. This is a neat way of expressing the idea of negative feedback balanced with encouragement - see the Society articles. http://www.spiritedorg.org/publications/society-articles/

Yesterday my sister asked me to give her the simple version of what the Society is about. Here are the first two points:
1. If relationships at work focus on boosting the spirit of other people, interactions between people would be significantly better than primarily having a competitive or self-interested focus.
2. If organizations explicitly acknowledge their role of enhancing human spirit in society, such relationships would be an expectation - in place of competitiveness, undermining, territoriality and abuse.

The concept of Symbiotic Competition reconciles the drive for competition within an organization with the drive for collaboration. Have a look at the Spirited Organization Society blog for more commentary. http://www.spiritedorg.org/blog/

But helping anyone to have the courage to act or to persevere is by definition empowering them. Yesterday an elderly lady in our…

I am just completing my blog article on How Sport Has Changed. I make a comparison between modern responses to mistakes in sport and what happened when I played. The question being why our organizations cannot do the same as modern professional sports teams. This morning I noticed this news article. What would you do if the player were a member of your sport team? What would you do at work if a colleague made an equivalent blunder?

Hi, we are now in a position to progress with the social media presence of the Spirited Organization Society. If you look at our web page you will see our first blog post about encouragement. We have also uploaded a paper "In Praise of Encouragement" into the Society Publications.

If you are wondering about the photo, it relates to our logo. The logo can be seen as a styalistic S and P from the Society name. However I prefer to see it as two hands cupped together, with one supporting the other. So I have started taking photos of supportive hand clasps. This is one of a number taken when a grandson happened to hold my finger when he went to sleep on my lap.

I hope that he has plenty of people in his life who will encourage him.
