🌈 Well done Burnie City Council...

Let's hope Break O'Day Council can be as proactive! 🏳️‍🌈

Tonight at our Burnie City Council meeting, we became the first Council in North West Tasmania to endorse an LGBTIQA Action Plan.

For me, this plan was all about recognising that every person who calls Burnie home, should feel that they belong here. That they are respected that their voice matters, regardless of sexuality.

Thank you to our Community advisory group, some are pictured here, to Chris Lynch - Burnie City councillor and Amina Keygan: Councillor Burnie City Council for your love and support through all of this, without any hesitation. And to you Rodney Croome 🙌

Thank you for your guidance, support and your dedication, not just during this process that got us here, but for the years of advocacy for LGBTIQA+ rights in Tasmania, for as long as I can remember. Thank you 🥰

And to our staff and team, thank you for making me feel so proud to be surrounded by such amazing people.

We also passed our Indoor Sports Centre Feasibility Study, the investigation motion into a Giant Emu for Burnie and a new look Artscape for Little Alexander Street! But let’s celebrate this one first!

Five suspects have been arrested in the Melbourne suburb of Dandenong as Australian police investigate a string of alleged homophobic attacks.

The suspects, all of whom are men aged between 16 and 18, were apprehended after police alleged they had used dating apps and social media to lure men to secluded locations before s*xually assaulting and robbing them.

The men have been accused of carrying out 11 homophobic attacks in the Dandenong area, and are five of 47 people who have been arrested for 113 similar attacks in the last three years.

They face several charges, including kidnapping, s*xual assault, intentionally causing injury and armed robbery.

Acting Inspector Jarrod Dwyer of Victoria Police said of the attacks: “There is no place for it in our society, and it will not be tolerated by police… “Everyone has a right to go about their lives, meet new people and start a relationship in safety. It is never too late to make a report, so when you're ready, please speak to us. The more we know, the more we can do something about it and keep victims safe.”

💯 - altho not before time tbh...

Australia's 2026 Census will include questions on sexual orientation and gender identity for the first time in the survey's history.

From this year, Australians aged 16 and over will be asked about their gender, with options including man, woman, non-binary, or another term of their choosing, as well as their sexual orientation, with categories covering straight, gay or le***an, bisexual, and more.

The move addresses a long-standing gap in national data. Without official figures, understanding the size of Australia's LGBTQ+ population, its health needs, and service demands has remained limited.

Data from the census will be released in stages from June 2027.

🌟 National Volunteer Week Spotlight 🌟

Meet Marko 📚💙

Marko is a passionate volunteer with Libraries Tasmania who has been volunteering in the community for just over a year.
Through his volunteer role, Marko supports people with technology and digital literacy, helping community members build confidence online.

After completing university studies, Marko was looking for a meaningful way to reconnect with the community, meet people, and make a positive difference. Volunteering provided the perfect opportunity to combine his passion for helping others with practical support that has a real impact on people’s everyday lives.
Whether helping someone navigate technology or simply making people feel welcomed and included, Marko believes volunteering plays an important role in strengthening community connections and creating a greater sense of belonging for everyone.

Alongside his volunteering with St Helens Library Tasmania, Marko is also passionate about advocacy and inclusion for the LGBTQIA+ community, particularly within rural and regional areas where visibility, connection, and support can sometimes be limited.
Marko has created a local community group called NETas Pride, focused on creating safe spaces, building stronger community connections, and improving access to support and resources across North East Tasmania.

He believes positive role models and inclusive community spaces are incredibly important, especially for young people living in rural communities who may not always feel represented or supported.
For anyone interested in volunteering with Libraries Tasmania, Marko encourages people to reach out to their local library to learn more about available volunteer opportunities and ways to get involved.
