The Queensland Kangaroo population estimate in 2026 accounts for 54.7 per cent of the Australian mainland Kangaroo population estimate. The Queensland commercial quota in 2026 accounts for 57 per cent of the Australian mainland quota. The questionable Queensland estimates play a significant role (they do this every year) in distorting Kangaroo population estimates and resulting quotas in Australia. Here is what happened in 2025.

Long banned, a newly proposed amendment seeks to carve out an exception to the protection for Kangaroos, provided that the animals were killed for commercial gain for their skins and meat (a trade in wildlife) in accordance with Australian law.
