The choir is busy practicing for our next performance ๐ŸŽผ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽน, the yearly Mission to Seafarers Service, which is held each year in September in the most incredible venue we have ever performed in, St John's Cathedral โ›ช.

This annual Service is held to honour seafarers who risk their lives every day to serve our community, and to remember the sailors already lost to the seas and to water environments. The Governor of Queensland, representatives from government departments, various seafaring organisations and associations across Queensland always attend this meaningful Service to represent their staff and members โ›ดโš“.

It's always a big honour to be invited back to perform each year at such a wonderful event. We don't underestimate the gift we are given to be included in this experience, and to be able to perform in the Cathedral each year, a truly uplifting and comforting experience for everyone.

If you are interested in joining us, or know of someone who is interested in singing with others in a safe and welcoming environment ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽผ๐ŸŽน, making lifelong friends and improving your health at the same time, please see our contact details to make enquiries - http://www.southerncrossvoices.org.au/.

P.S. We especially need basses in our choir!

Please like and share this post to spread the word. Thank you!๐Ÿ‘ˆ

Have you ever wondered why it feels so good to sing in the shower or belt out a song in the car? ๐Ÿ—ฃ๐ŸŽค๐ŸŽง๐Ÿ”Š.

Singing has been proven to have incredible health benefits, including lowering stress, releasing happy hormones, slowing the heart rate, lowering blood pressure, improving the efficiency of the immune system and digestion, making new connections in the brain, and heightening a person's pain threshold ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ’Š๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸŽ“๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’ช.

Well that's a wrap on the joint choir performance for Bulimba Sings with our good friends Momentum Choir. A fun time was had by all, we both had starring sets and sang a couple of pop songs together as a joint choir ๐ŸŽผ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽน๐Ÿ‘ˆ.

Similar to what we normally have in our annual concert, we had a guest soloist, Cam Boon. He was very good ๐Ÿ‘.

According to Robert, we got some wonderful positive comments from the audience (...'I had shivers going down my spine!'..), which makes all the rehearsing and learning choral movements worthwhile!๐Ÿคœ๐Ÿค›๐Ÿ‘Œ

Here's some pics of the afternoon for your viewing pleasure...

Meet the lovely Carmel Zeller who has sung with Southern Cross Voices since its inception 34 years ago. Carmel has always loved singing and previously was an active singer in her church choir. Southern Cross Voices has been a great part of Carmelโ€™s life. She has made some โ€œamazingโ€ lifelong friends in our friendly choir community and can attest to how choral singing promotes well-being and connection, and how it can sustain you through those difficult times in life. She also recognises that the challenge of memorising songs is great for our brain health.

She has a wealth of knowledge of the history of the choir. One of Carmelโ€™s highlights was singing in Italian with Southern Cross Voices and Opera Queensland singers at the ANZ Stadium in the Brisbane performance of the AIDA Spectacular on its worldwide tour in 1997. She also sang with the choir at Opera Queenslandโ€™s Centenary Federation concert in 2001.

Carmel and the choir attended three Festival of Voices in Tasmania where they participated in choral workshops from international choral directors which culminated in a final concert. When a gospel singing workshop was booked out, Carmel and some of the Altos had the best time when they joined a Swedish heavy metal acappella rockers workshop and performed a rock concert complete with a mosh pit and singers (not Carmel) leaping off the stage! They ended up featuring on ABC television news and radio!

She remembers that choristers from Southern Cross Voices attended about five Big Sings in regional Queensland towns, for an opportunity to join a mass choir over a weekend and perform alongside professional musicians singing some of the most loved choral works. It sounds like Carmel and the choir, particularly the Altos, revelled in the singing and fun at these events.

Over the years, as a Southern Cross chorister, she has sung with Glen Shorrock with a massed choir from across Australia, been coached by Deke Sharon, the American Aceppella Music Director of the Pitch Perfect movie and soundtrack, and vocal coaches and chorist masters from the Conservatorium and Opera Queensland. In Carmelโ€™s words, being in the Southern Cross Voices has been an amazing part and journey in her life. ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽผ๐ŸŽน

Thanks Carmel for your contributions to our choir and for sharing your wonderful choir experiences with us! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜‰

For all choir members, remember that tonight is our last night of the term, so next week will be free except those who are attending the vocal training workshops in the next few weeks. Please see Trish for details!
