This year we have a Celtic song theme, featuring traditional and some more modern songs from the Celtic countries, England, Scotland, Ireland ☘️ and Wales. As always this event is the culmination of all the work that we do throughout the year 👈.

We'd like to introduce all our fans to our new Musical Director, Beth Hughes.

Beth is a Brisbane-based conductor, pianist and music educator with a passion for creating engaging, collaborative choral experiences.

She holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Performance from the University of New England and has extensive experience working with choirs and community ensembles across Melbourne and Brisbane.

Beth was Musical Director of ARCappella Choir and has worked with quite a few ensembles, including Victorian Youth Symphony Orchestra (VYSO), Melbourne Rainbow Band 🌈 and Darebin City Brass🎺. She has also served as Choir Master for Carols by Queerlight, bringing her experience in choral direction and performance to large-scale community events.

Alongside conducting, Beth has been teaching piano 🎹, music theory and musicianship 🎶 for almost a decade, with a particular focus on AMEB preparation 📖. She is passionate about helping musicians develop confidence, musicality and a strong sense of connection 🤜🤛 within an ensemble.

Beth is thrilled to be joining Southern Cross Voices and looks forward to making music, building community and sharing great choral experiences with the choir.🗣

She has a big task ahead with learning who we are, how our choir works, what music we have, and what has already been arranged by our previous MD, Robert, all just in time for our annual concert at the end of this month, whew!😅

We look forward to getting to know her, having a lot of fun and some laughs as always, building a new friendship with her and growing further in our musicianship, vocal harmonies and vocal cohesion with her able direction.

As part of our Celtic song theme this year, we are singing the following classic Irish ballad "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling".☘️

This is a lighthearted song that has been composed as a tribute to Ireland. Its lyrics were written by Chauncey Olcott and George Graff, Jr., set to music composed by Ernest Ball, for Olcott's production of The Isle O' Dreams, and Olcott sang the song in the show. 🎵🎶🎼

It was first published in 1912 📖, at a time when songs in tribute to a romanticised Ireland were very numerous and popular both in Britain and the United States. During the First World War the famous tenor John McCormack recorded the song. 🎤🎙

Photos of us at the Mission to Seafarer's Service at St John's Cathedral on Sunday. It's such a beautiful venue with incredible acoustics 🎼🎹🎶. We count ourselves very lucky to be there and experience the sound, the atmosphere, the pomp and the circumstance!🎉🎊 We did see our Governor, Dr Jeannette Young there and one of the speakers directly addressed her, wishing her well since this is her last year as Governor.

Of course this is also the very last performance with Robert and so he said a fond goodbye to us there when we were having afternoon tea, and then sent us a heartfelt email. We hope the journey south goes reasonably smoothly for him 🥰🚗🚘🚒. We meet our new Musical Director this week and so it's exciting times ahead!👈🎹🎶

The weekend is fast approaching where we perform at one of our most important gigs of the year, the Mission to Seafarer's Service at St John's Cathedral in the city ⚓. It's always a true honour to perform in such an incredible building and in front of so many important dignitaries, including our State Governor General.

Sadly though, this will be the last performance where our Musical Director, Robert Dryden, will be conducting us 😞. He will be moving back to his family and friends in Melbourne soon after. We want to sincerely thank him for his leadership, breadth of experience and musicality, vastly improving our performance, vocal skills and harmonies 🎶🎼🎹.

In particular, we want to acknowledge that he started conducting us in some very trying times for our choir at the beginning of 2021, when we were all still wearing masks 😷, and when singing in groups was regarded as a risky activity. His steady guidance of our choir through that difficult period is much appreciated by us.

Although we are sad about his impending departure, we truly wish him well back in his home city with his family and friends. We know that a choir down south will truly benefit from his musical and leadership talents. Fare thee well, Robert!👈

The choir is busy practicing for our next performance 🎼🎶🎹, the yearly Mission to Seafarers Service, which is held each year in September in the most incredible venue we have ever performed in, St John's Cathedral ⛪.

This annual Service is held to honour seafarers who risk their lives every day to serve our community, and to remember the sailors already lost to the seas and to water environments. The Governor of Queensland, representatives from government departments, various seafaring organisations and associations across Queensland always attend this meaningful Service to represent their staff and members ⛴⚓.

It's always a big honour to be invited back to perform each year at such a wonderful event. We don't underestimate the gift we are given to be included in this experience, and to be able to perform in the Cathedral each year, a truly uplifting and comforting experience for everyone.

Well that's a wrap on the joint choir performance for Bulimba Sings with our good friends Momentum Choir. A fun time was had by all, we both had starring sets and sang a couple of pop songs together as a joint choir 🎼🎶🎹👈.

Similar to what we normally have in our annual concert, we had a guest soloist, Cam Boon. He was very good 👏.

According to Robert, we got some wonderful positive comments from the audience (...'I had shivers going down my spine!'..), which makes all the rehearsing and learning choral movements worthwhile!🤜🤛👌
