A few months ago the Archbishop of St John's Cathedral made contact with us as he usually does every year to organise songs to sing at the Mission to Seafarers Service which we perform at every year.

He was particularly interested in sacred songs of peace in our repertoire, considering the war in the Middle East and the possibility that our Navy might be called to serve.

One of the songs picked is "The Lord Bless You and Keep You", a notable sacred song by the prolific British composer, John Rutter. Click on the link to see a rendition of the song by the St Andrews Cathedral Chamber Choir in Sydney.

If you are interested in what we do and would like to join us, please go to our website to see our contact details - www.southerncrossvoices.org.au.

A great big welcome back to our treasured MD, Robert, after a few weeks away sick and visiting family down south. We definitely missed you (but Bernadette did an absolute stellar job in keeping us all in line)! ๐ŸŽผ๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ‘ˆ

Just a bit of a reminder to all our choristers that we covered the following songs last week and we need to continue practicing them to commit them to memory๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸŽ“:

Orinoco Flow - Itโ€™s time to be learning the words.
Life in a Northern Town - Last week we worked on the dynamics.
Iโ€™ll Tell My Ma - Hereโ€™s an opportunity to play it up with our expressions and actions!

Remember also that we have been given a great opportunity to attend a workshop with a Speech Pathologist to work on the quality and strength of our voices. The cost of the day is $30. If you would like to attend, please contact Trish for details.

As part of our Celtic song theme this year, we will be singing a choral version of the song we show here.

"May the road rise to meet you" is an Irish blessing that has been passed down through generations. It is a traditional way of wishing someone good luck and fortune on their life's journey. This blessing carries a simple yet powerful message that has resonated with people worldwide.

In full, the blessing, which is also used as a prayer, reads as follows:

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

If you are interested in checking out our community choir, please go to our webpage to get our contact details (www.southerncrossvoices.org.au) or message us through our page. We are an SATB (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass), non-auditioning community choir located in Springwood.

When our beloved Musical Director, Robert, introduced this little ditty to our choir to warm up with, little did we know that this was a full choral song. Here's a little historical background.

"Hey, Ho, Nobody Home" is a traditional 17th-century English folk song and drinking round, often associated with Christmas carolers, wassailers, or beggars soliciting food and drink in exchange for singing. Known for its minor key and theme of remaining merry despite having no "meat, nor drink, nor money," it was famously published as a "catch" in Thomas Ravenscroft's Pammelia in 1609.

The piece is noted for its dramatic minor key, which is unusual for many traditional children's rounds, which often favour major keys.

In addition to performing "Mull of Kintyre", sung by Paul McCartney in Wings, we just couldn't resist adding a choral version of a very popular Beatles song sung by Sir Paul to our Celtic song lineup this year ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽผ๐ŸŽน. We hope you enjoy the original clip!

Here we are performing at an Arcare Aged Care facility on the southside of Brisbane a couple of years ago. Much to our joy, we've been invited back to perform in a few weeks. This will be our fifth time, so they must really like us ๐Ÿ˜Š๐ŸŽน๐ŸŽผ๐ŸŽถ!

If your elderly loved ones like to be entertained with fantastic, rousing music; please let the places where they live know that we are available for performances. Go to our website for contact details - www.southerncrossvoices.org.au.

This year we are learning a very popular song that many people will likely be familiar with, being a folk tune made famous by the incomparable folk balladeers, Simon & Garfunkel. It's Scarborough Fair / Canticle.

Apparently the main stanzas of this ballad hark right back to the Middle Ages, and talk about the singer requesting a former lover to accomplish some impossible tasks, like making a cambric (lace) shirt without sewing it together. A big challenge indeed!

This writer remembers being introduced to this beautiful song on a Simon & Garfunkel record owned by my parents back in the 70's. The harmonies made by this duo were just fantastic, and for that reason, this is a great song for us to learn as part of our Celt-themed song lineup this year.

Hello music lovers! We are in recruitment mode!

Our next Open Night where you can try us out is nearly here. Please join us this Wednesday at 7pm to try us out. You can come for free to 4 rehearsals to decide whether you like singing with us and to meet other music lovers.

You don't have to be Olivia Newton-John or Josh Groban to join our choir. If you sing in the car while on a road trip or sing in the shower, you will find that you fit in nicely. We don't have auditions, you don't have to read music and you don't have to have prior experience with a choir. We will gladly welcome you to our merry group.

Please contact Trish on 0424 688 835 or email our choir email address, [email protected], to express interest in coming on Wednesday evening. This means that we have a chance to get some music together for you to sing with.

Please like this post, follow our FB page and share this post with your friends and family to spread the word far and wide. Please ask them to re-share this post to their own social networks. We would really appreciate the help to spread our message to everyone who can be reached.
