India has awarded the prestigious Padma Shri to Dr Neerja Bhatla, a name synonymous with cervical cancer prevention and care.
With an unwavering commitment spanning over 35 years, Dr Bhatla has transformed how cervical cancer is detected, managed, and prevented, particularly in low-resource settings.
As the former Head of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at AIIMS, Delhi, Dr. Bhatla:
> Pioneered trials establishing the efficacy of India’s indigenously developed HPV vaccine by the Serum Institute.
> Led the development of resource-based guidelines for cervical cancer screening, management, and HPV vaccination.
> Chaired FIGO, creating the globally recognised Gynecologic Cancer Management Map.
Her groundbreaking work continues beyond her tenure at AIIMS, with ongoing research into affordable HPV testing and vaccines, offering hope to millions of women.
