Our small rural community is still feeling the impact of the fire on January 9th, and though we have moved from an emergency response into the long business of recovery, the enormity of the task ahead is beginning to dawn.
Bushfire recovery takes time, and although on the surface this is old news, here on the fire ground land is being cleared, projects are beginning and timelines are stretching years into the future.
As the dust and the ash begins to settle the real toll of the fire is becoming apparent. Not just in the physical sense, but in the mental sense. The adrenaline has worn off and now in it's place, trauma, grief are overwhelm seeping to the surface.
If you have friends or family members who have been impacted by natural disasters this summer, please check on them. The support drops off, but the need for it remains.
We are still working hard behind the scenes and have created strong links with Skipton Food Bank who continue to support our local community each day. They get to see firsthand how people are holding up, what support they need, and where support is lacking. They hear the stories about signing contracts for rebuilding, how the price of plumbing supplies is set to rise by 20%, how much of a struggle it is to sow crops with the increasing price of fuel.
We know that the momentum and the urgency to help these families has waned. We know that there is still so much more work to be done.
If you would like to support our Fire Recovery effort, donations are gratefully received. All funds will be distributed directly to fire affected families, with emergency payments already accessible to those who need it most. We hope to continue fund raising throughout April, as we know that with a larger dollar amount we can make the biggest impact.
