📢 CRUCIAL WILDLIFE ALERT: SHOREBIRDS NESTING ON SINGLETON BEACH! 📢
We need your help, Singleton community!
During yesterday’s m beach clean-up, Singleton Coastcare located a nesting shorebird (likely a Plover) with at least two eggs laid directly on the sand.

The location is on Northern Singleton Beach, near the carpark closest to the deli.
These birds nest in a simple scrape in the sand, and the eggs are incredibly well camouflaged and vulnerable. Disturbance from people and, especially, dogs can cause the parents to abandon the nest, which is fatal for the eggs.

🙏 Please help us protect them by taking immediate action:
1. NO DOGS IN THIS AREA: The northern part of Singleton Beach is a designated No Dog area. We ask that all residents and visitors strictly adhere to this rule. Even one dog can wipe out a whole season's breeding success.
2. WATCH YOUR STEP: Please walk closer to the water's edge and stay well away from the dune line and the higher, dry sand area near the nesting site.
3. KEEP YOUR DISTANCE: If you see any temporary fencing or signage go up (we have requested this from the Council), please keep well outside the marked area.
We have reported the exact location to the Council (City of Rockingham) and requested urgent fencing and additional "No Dog" signage.
Let's work together to give these precious Singleton locals a chance to hatch and fledge! Thank you for protecting our beautiful coastline and its residents.

This morning we had a great turn out of volunteers to help collect rubbish for Tangaroa Blue WA Beach Clean-Up! The weather was lovely, although we all got very good at working with the wind to stop our rubbish blowing away.

As a team we collected 16kg of rubbish along our beautiful beach. We collected a lot of plastics including bottle lids, so much soft plastics, a few fishing lines and boating ropes. It was great that we didn’t find any vapes but did collect over 70 cigarette butts. After cataloging the rubbish our data will be sent to Tangaroa Blue to be compiled with data from all across the state.

We also saw loads of wildlife, including a hooded plover with chicks nesting on the beach.

A massive thanks to our volunteers that gave up their Saturday morning to help our oceans and marine life. 🌊🩵🌊

Thanks to Perth NRM for the morning tea!

Huge thanks to David and Eva from Animal Ark for their insightful and inspiring talk about snakes in Singleton today. We learnt that the best thing to do when we see a snake is to stay calm and it leave it alone. Some other interesting facts we learnt are that Tiger snakes have live babies as do Bobtail lizards, Spiders leave little white spots of poo around, and that frogs are super cute! Check out Animal Ark’s page to find out more information on their Snake Avoidance Training for dogs and other services.

Keep your eyes out for any future events and let us know if there is anything you would be interested in learning more about.

So much rubbish washed up in winter storms, including these barnacle encrusted plastic bottles.
We will be holding a beach clean up in October for the WA beach clean up but in the meantime, please remember to take “three for the sea” (at least 3 pieces of rubbish every walk).

Massive thank you to our amazing community members that came to our planting event today. Even despite the dark clouds, and a shower or two, we had a great turn out. We got over 700 plants in the ground and much fun was had by all. Thanks again and watch this space for our next community event! 🌱❤️🌊
