Over the last few days we have had crews from Oak Flats joint with Illawarra Support Rural Fire Brigade to help assist in the search for the missing individual in the Royal National Park near Waterfall.

This weekend our brigade have joined Illawarra Support Rural Fire Brigade and NSW RFS - Oak Flats Brigade to stand up as part of a fire response for Wings over Shellharbour.

Our bulk water joined a Category 6 appliance and stood up at Illawarra FCC for rapid response both days. Thankfully aresponse to an incident was not required.

It is with great sadness that we hear about the passing of a fellow firefighter from the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, who was killed last night while carrying out firefighting operations on a fireground south of Bulahdelah.

Our deepest sympathies go to their family, friends, and colleagues as they navigate these difficult times.

🔥EXTREME FIRE DANGER - TOTAL FIRE BAN🔥

Saturday 6 December

A Total Fire Ban will be in place in many areas including Sutherland, Wollongong, Shellharbour, and Kiama LGAs.

These conditions mean fires can start easily, spread fast, and threaten lives quickly, even in urban areas. We are urging residents to stay alert and stay safe.

✅ Actions to take:

- Bush Fire Survival Plan: what you'll do and where you’ll go if bush fire threatens
- Clear small fuels: leaves by doors, balconies, paths, and gutters
- Charge your phone, keep emergency apps active

🚫 Total Fire Ban

This is not optional:
- No fires outdoors
- No wood/charcoal BBQs - gas/electric only
- No grinding, welding, cutting, or machinery that sparks
- Zero tolerance for careless ignition (including ci******es)
- Severe penalties apply

Only 1 more sleep until Santa will be making his way around the streets of Oak Flats to see all the boys and girls this Saturday!! Santa and his fire fighter helpers will be handing out lollies to all and collecting non perishable donations for St Vincent De Paul. Make sure you listen out for the festive music and that’s where Santa will be 🚒

🚨 EXTREME FIRE DANGER & TOTAL FIRE BAN – TOMORROW 🚨

Tomorrow’s Fire Danger Rating is EXTREME, and a Total Fire Ban will be in place across the Illawarra/Shoalhaven and Greater Sydney (Sutherland) areas.

WHAT TO DO TODAY

- Review your Bush Fire Survival Plan – know when you will leave and where you will go
- Clear leaves from balconies, gutters, doorways, and small garden beds
- Secure loose items ahead of strong winds
- Check your phone is charged and your emergency apps are updated
- Make sure everyone in your home, especially kids and vulnerable family members, knows the plan
- If you live near bushland, reserves, escarpment edge, or coastal scrub, be extra prepared to leave early

TOTAL FIRE BAN – WHAT IT MEANS

🔥 No fires outdoors
🔥 No wood or charcoal BBQs (gas/electric only)
🔧 No outdoor hot works (welding, grinding, cutting metal)
🚜 Avoid using equipment that may spark (mowers, slashers)

🎅🎄SANTA IS COMING TO TOWN🎄🚒

On Saturday 6th December the Oak Flats Rual Fire Brigade will be doing their annual food drive of non-perishable items for St Vincent De Paul. Santa will be out and about in the streets with our friendly firefighters. All donations are graciously appreciated to help our local community. There will be plenty of lollies for all children with Santa making a special appearance with our friendly firefighters.
