This Foster Care Week, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to every foster carer who opens their home and heart to a child in need.

You provide more than just a safe place to live, you create stability, belonging and hope at the moments when children and young people need it most.

This year’s theme, Time to Care, reminds us that every moment you give matters. From the school runs to the late-night chats, the small everyday acts of care leave a lifelong impact.

During Foster Care Week, we were grateful to welcome Mary Doyle MP to Anchor, where she met with two of our incredible carers, Cindy and Dave.

Mary’s visit was an important opportunity to recognise the extraordinary value that foster and kinship carers provide to children, young people and families in our community, as well as to share some of the very real challenges carers face every day.

Thank you, Mary, for your ongoing commitment to supporting carers and for acknowledging the difference they make in creating safe, stable and nurturing homes.

With this week being Foster Care week, pause to recognise and celebrate the incredible people who open their homes and hearts to children and young people who need safety, stability and love.

But behind the celebration is a sobering reality.
📊 As of June 2024, 9,210 children in Victoria were living in out-of-home care. Only 14% (1,275) were in foster care. Last year alone, Victoria lost 137 foster care households, leaving even fewer safe places for children who need them most.

Foster carers aren’t just important. They are lifelines. They provide love in times of fear, stability in times of chaos and hope when the future feels uncertain.

This Foster Care Week, we say thank you to the extraordinary carers who give their time and care so generously.

On the weekend, we were proud to see foster carers Amanda and Dean recognised with the Tilly Aston Carer of the Year Award for their incredible 20 years of dedication.

For two decades, their home has been a safe, stable and loving place for some of our community’s most vulnerable children and young people. They were especially recognised for the extraordinary support they’ve provided to a young child with a serious disability, ensuring they could grow, thrive and feel truly at home.

This award is a powerful reminder of the life-changing role foster carers play every single day. We are so proud to have Amanda and Dean as part of our Anchor foster care community.

Foster Care Week isn't far away! We proudly joined Centre for Excellence in Child and Family Welfare, other foster care agencies, and foster carers for their launch event in the city this morning.

What stood out was the need for respect and recognition for the incredible work that foster carers do.

CEO of the Centre for Excellence, Deb Tsorbaris used the word ‘Herculean’ to describe their efforts – their strength, their resilience and determination.

Foster Carers represent and demonstrate the very best of Australian values. Without them, there is no foster care system.

Foster Care Week runs from 14th – 20th September.
