Kamay Greenway

We have heard from residents and have seen for ourselves that Margate Street is currently a rat run for motorist attempting to bypass traffic on Chuter Avenue and trying to turn right into northbound traffic on Rocky Point Road.

As part of the Kamay Greenway this road can be reimagined. And it doesn’t need a major overhaul to change how it is used.

Painting or paving the road and installing planted buildouts into the road at intersection corners, instead of no stopping zones, can create pinch points to slow car users.

The addition of a separated cycle way along one side can make this a safe connection for bike riders and kids on scooters. But what about parking? This road, by our estimations,! is wide enough to accommodate bicycle infrastructure and parking along both sides.

Reducing the speed limit from 50 down to 30 can also make this road less car-centric. The Kamay Greenway Working Group, in conjunction with the community after hearing from residents on our route mapping walk, proposes this road be made a quietway to facilitate an active transport link between Scarborough Park and the greenspace that continues south on park rd.

According to Bayside Council papers published recently KG has been allocated funding via the developer contributions scheme.

The estimate is $16 million and it has a rollout timeline of 1 to 4 years. We will keep a close eye on these developments and what aspects of the KG have been included in these estimates.

If you follow this page you know that it’s not just a path. A Greenway as we have seen in the Inner West, includes improvements to biodiversity, mangrove, wetland and creek health, a holistic approach to bush regeneration, water quality and flood management, First Nations storytelling, outdoor art… It is also an educational precinct, tourist destination and active transport corridor.

The Draft Operational Plan & Budget 2026-2027 is included in the agenda attachments for the 22 April Council Meeting. There are a few little mentions of the Kamay Greenway.
