On Thursday morning volunteers from the WiSP Habitat Group removed a ute load of gazanias from the corner of Park Avenue and Beach Parade. The area will be mulched in preparation for planting in May. The planting of local species helps to preserve our unique Sandy Point landscape. The cost of the plants was funded by a grant from Planet Ark. Another street corner will be cleared early next Saturday morning, also in preparation for mulching and planting.
Sandy Point homeowners will get an opportunity in May/June to receive some free plants as part of this project. To be involved you have to swap some w**ds for the free plants, or have some evidence of w**d removal from your property or nature strip. Details to follow.
If you would like to be involved in the Street Corner Weeding and Planting activities, please contact us at [email protected]

Itโ€™s that time of year again. WiSP wants to remind people that now is the time to head agapanthus. Flowers are food but once the blossoms have wilted itโ€™s time to head them before they seed.

Fish Creek Community Composter has indicated they are happy to take the heads (they can go into the green bin with the stem as well). WiSP will arrange transport and can provide bags for the heads. Please arrange transport and or bags on 0499 006 800.

WiSP encourages people to replace agapanthus with indigenous Dianella revoluta (Coastal Flax-lily) or a local indigenous grass.

More information regarding Sandy Point plants and w**ds can be found on SPCG website via this link.

Ned Neales is now gazania free due to the quick work of our dedicated community volunteers. Thanks to Henri and Cherry of The WiSP Habitat Group for organising it. If you have any questions or would like to be involved in other working bees please contact them on: [email protected]. Thereโ€™s always something yum at the end and we get to catch up and socialise.

Thanks to all who worked hard and smart over the past few weeks to rid Ned Neales of this invasive plant. Hereโ€™s more information on gazanias and the call for retailers to stop selling them.

A section of Sandy Point beach has been reopened to the public after a stranded whale caused the entire beach to be closed yesterday.

Beachgoers can now walk towards Waratah Bay township from the second ramp near Park Ave. The beach to the southeast of this point (towards Shallow Inlet) remains closed to the public.

Overnight tides moved the whale along the beach but there is little likelihood that it will be washed back into the ocean.

The eight-metre juvenile humpback whale, which washed up on the beach on Thursday night, is a potential public health risk. A 300m exclusion zone surrounds the whale, which is starting to emit foul odours.

A shark warning is in place for the local area, with updates via the Vic Emergency website and app https://emergency.vic.gov.au/respond/

The whale was partially eaten by sharks before washing up on the beach, with sharks likely to remain in the vicinity for some time. DO NOT enter the water at Sandy Point.

The Incident Management Team is investigating viable methods for removal.

Members of the public are reminded it is an offence for people or their dogs to be within 300 metres of a whale.

Whales are protected under the Wildlife Act โ€“ regardless of whether they are alive or dead. It is an offence to interfere with, take or be in possession of parts of a dead whale.

Sandy Point beach will be closed to the public until further notice after an eight metre juvenile humpback whale washed up on the beach.

The deceased whale, which was first reported on Thursday morning, is located a few hundred metres from the surf lifesaving club.

Signage is installed and community members are asked to keep off the beach for their own safety.
