Yesterday, December 3rd, was the International Day of People with Disability. TUSA recognises and celebrates the more than one in four Tasmanians who live with disability, including the many students across our UTAS community. Weâre reminded today that inclusion is not symbolic or occasional but rather everyday work grounded in dignity, accessibility, and the right to participate fully in education and community life.Â
Â
The 2025 theme, âStrengthening Participation: Building Communities That Work for Everyoneâ speaks directly to our TUSA values. Being Bold means naming the barriers students face and pushing for systemic change. Being Connected means working alongside disabled students, carers, staff, and community partners to collaboratively build solutions that reflect lived experience. Being Student-Led means ensuring disabled students shape the direction of our advocacy and not just the outcomes. And being Kind and Effective means taking action that makes a real, tangible difference in peopleâs lives.
Â
Across 2024â25, the TUSA State Council and Equity Committee have championed accessibility by advocating for safer, more inclusive learning environments, contributing to the Universityâs Disability Action Plan, the initial stages of Universal Design for Learning at UTAS, the implementation of Research Training Access Plans (RTAP) for HDR students, supporting DiSCoâs growth, and elevating issues in academic and campus accessibility. But we know there is more to do.Â
Â
We reaffirm our commitment to a University culture where disabled students are respected, heard, and supported to succeed by UTAS from the start, not just as an add-on at the end. As our former Equity President Mark Warrington said, âwhen we remove barriers, everyone moves forwardâ.
