TUSA State Council

TUSA State Council Your student representative council for University of Tasmania students. Students like you, for you!

29/05/2026

Juggling classes, meetings, assignments and representing students as part of the State Council is no easy task. Join Oli, your Southern Campus President, in just one day in his busy life, including planning the Vent Tents those of you on the southern campuses may have met him at!

The days of all of our reps look a little bit different, so stay tuned for videos from some of your other reps in the future 👀

The TUSA State Council supports the right of all UTAS staff to fight for better working conditions, and we stand in solidarity with them as they do so. Better staff conditions directly lead to better learning conditions, and we stand in support of better working and learning conditions for all. We urge the University to listen to staff and student voices, and to ensure better working and learning conditions for all.

The NTEU are commencing industrial action this week with a short ‘Stop Work’ strike today in the south and tomorrow in the north. While we are working with the NTEU to try and ensure minimal disruption to key student assessments, if you need support during this time, please contact our TUSA Advocates at [email protected].

Have thoughts about academic quality and course delivery at uni? Join your State Council next Monday, May 4th for an online Academic Roundtable!

Academic Roundtables are a great place to connect with your student representatives and let them know about the concern you, your Club or Society members, or your student cohorts might be experiencing. In next week’s Roundtable, we’ll be focusing on academic quality and the delivery of courses. If you have concerns that you’d like your student representatives to follow up on, this is a great opportunity to raise them!

Interested in coming along? To express your interest, email your Undergraduate Education President, Solomon, at [email protected] 📧

Yesterday, December 3rd, was the International Day of People with Disability. TUSA recognises and celebrates the more than one in four Tasmanians who live with disability, including the many students across our UTAS community. We’re reminded today that inclusion is not symbolic or occasional but rather everyday work grounded in dignity, accessibility, and the right to participate fully in education and community life.

The 2025 theme, “Strengthening Participation: Building Communities That Work for Everyone” speaks directly to our TUSA values. Being Bold means naming the barriers students face and pushing for systemic change. Being Connected means working alongside disabled students, carers, staff, and community partners to collaboratively build solutions that reflect lived experience. Being Student-Led means ensuring disabled students shape the direction of our advocacy and not just the outcomes. And being Kind and Effective means taking action that makes a real, tangible difference in people’s lives.

Across 2024–25, the TUSA State Council and Equity Committee have championed accessibility by advocating for safer, more inclusive learning environments, contributing to the University’s Disability Action Plan, the initial stages of Universal Design for Learning at UTAS, the implementation of Research Training Access Plans (RTAP) for HDR students, supporting DiSCo’s growth, and elevating issues in academic and campus accessibility. But we know there is more to do.

We reaffirm our commitment to a University culture where disabled students are respected, heard, and supported to succeed by UTAS from the start, not just as an add-on at the end. As our former Equity President Mark Warrington said, “when we remove barriers, everyone moves forward”.
