The onset of prevailing northerly winds, characteristic of winter, has resulted in the return of sand to the Sandringham beaches.
Annual erosion is anticipated every year during summer months due to the presence of the Southey St rock groyne and seasonal sand migration.

Royal Ave beach today 28th March 2026 for the archives. Note sawtooth appearance of sand- at the south end sand is depleted, but at the northern end sand trapped behind the Southey St rock groyne. Cliffs in the centre are still eroding at Royal Ave Beach. Best witnessed first hand with a beach walk entire southern parts of Sandringham beach, starting at Tennyson st ramp walking south. Snake spotted at Brighton beach Green Point 4 days ago! Snakes are often spotted along the Bayside cliffs. 🐍
Important information from Bayside City Council:
As the temperature rises, snakes are more active and visible, generally along the foreshore, golf courses, and in bushland reserves as they seek sun and a mate. If you see a snake the best thing you can do is leave it alone. Stay calm and slowly walk away – moving children and pets along with you.

The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) advise that tiger snakes and lowland copperheads are the most frequently encountered snakes on the foreshore and coastal bushland areas.

It is rare for these snakes to bite people, however they are all venomous. Beware of snakes while walking the dog, cycling, bush-walking, gardening or visiting parks. It is important to remember that snakes are an important part of the ecosystem; they act as predators reducing populations of over-abundant pest species, such as mice and rats. Snakes are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975. It is illegal to capture, kill or harm them.

Tennyson St beach erosion continues into March. Since January 2026, this area of beach has very little sand & the soft cliffs continue to erode where there is no protection. The construction of the Southey St rock groyne end of 2006 has led to regular summer erosion at Sandringham beach (Tennyson St), resulting in significant dune, cliff face, and vegetation loss. With dunes and vegetation disappearing, the rocks are now exposed. Prior to the construction of the rock groyne, this area did not experience such issues. It used to be a wide sandy beach. There is no sand north of the Southey St rock groyne as most of it is trapped behind the rock groyne and sand has moved to the northern beaches due to prevailing southerly winds typical of summer. The erosion persists until April when northerly winds will return the sand, causing progressive cliff erosion during the summer months especially during storms. This is a recurring event now every summer!! A site visit via the Tennyson St carpark and ramp is highly recommended for firsthand observation.
