Mama Does Derby and Skates on Thin Ice

Adelaide Festival / Windmill Theatre Company
Rating: ★★½

In many ways, the face value of the general entertainment ends up distracting from the creators’ intentions. This disconnect between the heavy core themes and the frantic presentation style makes it difficult to pin down exactly which age group the production is aiming for. While it clearly pitches to young women, the subject matter often feels a little too sophisticated for the pre-teens who would be most drawn to the “cartoon” energy, yet the ex*****on lacks the depth required to fully engage an older, more cynical teenage audience.

There is also a notable disconnect in how the show engages its audience. A discrepancy between the digital programme (where the creators celebrate making the show for young women) and the foyer version (which highlights the youth mental health resource Headspace) points to a narrow focus. This was reflected in the reactions of the youth audience itself; while the young women largely enjoyed the “cool” aesthetic, the young men I spoke with found it off-putting. By treating its few male characters as little more than a joke, the production risks suggesting that the struggle for security and mental health is not a universal experience.

A Glass House in Seoul: Chekhov’s Grand Decline Reimagined

Director Simon Stone, celebrated for the architectural brilliance of the contemporary opera Innocence at the 2025 Adelaide Festival, returns with a blistering reimagining of Chekhov’s final masterpiece. This production is particularly significant as a co-commission between the Adelaide Festival and the LG Arts Center Seoul. That the Adelaide Festival has invested in such a brilliantly realised piece of international theatre is a testament to its global standing. By transplanting the action from pre-revolutionary Russia to a contemporary setting, Stone and Dramaturg & Script Translator Danbi Yi prove that Chekhov’s themes remain profoundly universal; the characters land as comfortably in this new cultural context as they ever did in the Russian provinces.

In Thomas Ostermeier’s unflinching adaptation of Édouard Louis’s History of Violence at the Adelaide Festival (Dunstan Playhouse,) the visceral narrative finds its heartbeat in the relentless, live sonic landscape crafted by Thomas Witte. Performing without interval for two hours, Witte’s ex*****on of Nils Ostendorf’s evocative composition functions as the production’s central nervous system; much like the musicians of Bunraku and Kabuki, the musical presence is as vital as the actors themselves. While the production’s deliberate pace at times felt as though it could have been tightened by thirty minutes, the hypnotic quality of the score ensured that the experience remained consistently absorbing.

A sharp, intellectual, and profoundly sad evening of theatre.
