🔹️ At the AUKUS Public Inquiry hearing in Wollongong, Melanie Barnes and Nick Southall of Wollongong Against War and Nukes presented concerns on behalf of a community campaign supported by more than 40 local organisations that oppose a proposed submarine base at Port Kembla.

🔹️ Barnes argued that the base could make the region a target for conventional or nuclear attack, raise the possibility of undisclosed nuclear-armed US submarines visiting the port, and expose the community to the risk of a nuclear accident despite Wollongong's long-standing nuclear-free status.

🔹️ She noted that Australia's nuclear safety agency has assessed that an accident at a submarine base could require widespread evacuations in Port Kembla, including local schools, yet residents have never been consulted about these risks.

🔹️ She also raised concerns about the social impacts of hosting thousands of US military personnel, citing evidence shared by visitors from Okinawa, where communities have reported cases of sexual violence linked to the long-term presence of US military bases and difficulties obtaining justice through military legal processes.

🔹️ Concluding their submission, Barnes criticised the secrecy surrounding the AUKUS agreement, arguing that it was negotiated without sufficient public or parliamentary scrutiny, and said the group believes AUKUS will reduce rather than improve community safety.
