Today (Tuesday 17th February) is a Total Fire Ban day in ‘Central District’ which also covers the entire Mornington Peninsula Shire Council, footprint, that means no open air burning without a written permit.

If a fire starts near you, enact your Fire Safety Plan.

Stay hydrated, look out for elderly neighbours, friends and family.

Move out of the way for approaching emergency vehicles displaying red/blue flashing lights and or siren operating, and remember only 40klm p/h around stationary emergency vehicles.

Let’s all come home safe.

Great work by Sorrento Fire Brigade volunteers led by Captain Michelle Croad who were faced with a large structure fire in Portsea on 24th January.

Just before 7:00am the Sorrento CFA, Rye CFA & FRV Pumper 95 were paged to the fire, with Sorrento arriving on scene within a few minutes.

Being a day of Total Fire Ban with excessive heat, many brigades were responded to assist in the firefight. The quick action in calling for additional resources to combat the fire were well founded in total twelve (12) CFA Brigades were involved and one Fire Rescue Victoria appliance.

Dromana Fire Brigade’s Pumper was moved up to man the Rye Fire Station as both Rye Pumper 1 & 2 appliances were at Portsea.

Well done to the initial crew from Sorrento who were met by a wall of flames in a three-storey structure that was well alight upon arrival.

Thankfully no injuries to the occupants or firefighters.

A prolonged fire that lasted until 4:30pm.

Tomorrow Saturday 24th January 2026 has been declared by the Country Fire Authority Chief Officer as a TOTAL FIRE BAN for the E N T I R E State of Victoria.

That means NO OPEN AIR BURNING whatsoever between Midnight tonight and 23:59 hours tomorrow without a written permit.

Please hydrate, keep a look out for elderly or disabled neighbours, enact your personal Fire Plan and let other family members know that plan, especially if you choose to leave.

Best option is to always LEAVE EARLY.

Keep to the left when you are in the path of Fire or Emergency Vehicles operating under emergency conditions (Lights & or Siren) and remember SLOW DOWN to 40 Kilometres when passing stationary emergency vehicles.

Lets all come home safe...Peninsula Fire Brigades Group

Today I have learnt our local CFA legends have been deployed to help in the fires in Longwood.
A massive, from the heart thank you to the Mount Martha CFA, Tyabb CFA, Somers CFA, Bittern CFA Crib Point CFA, Hastings CFA, Rosebud CFA, Rye CFA, Red Hill CFA, Mt Eliza CFA, Moorooduc CFA, Carrum Downs CFA, Main Ridge, Tyabb fire brigade, Somerville CFA & Dromana CFA who’ve packed up, kissed their families goodbye and headed north to help with the fires.

While the rest of us are worrying about what to cook for dinner, you legends are rolling straight toward danger. Leaving your own beds, your own routines, and any chance of a decent sleep, all to protect people you’ve probably never even met. That’s not just brave, that’s next-level good human behaviour.

You’re volunteers. Real people. Locals. The kind who say “yeah, no worries” and then proceed to do something most of us would absolutely not be mentally prepared for. Running toward fire while the rest of us are Googling “is it too hot to function today?”

We should be insanely proud. Northern Victoria, you’re in the safest hands possible. And if there’s one small comfort in all of this, it’s knowing that when things get serious, Australians don’t muck around… we just show up with trucks, teamwork, and that Aussie spirit of helping a mate.

Thank you for the courage, the sacrifice, and the absolute backbone you bring when it matters most.
Please come home safe. The beers, hugs, and community gratitude will be waiting. ❤️🔥🚒

Thank you to every man and woman around the country that have been sent out to these fires. Be safe, you’re absolute Legends in my book 🫶🏻
