ABOUT US
The Armenian Film Festival Australia showcases the best of Armenian films from Armenia and around the globe. Founded in 2016, the festival has grown year on year, with an annual festival in both Sydney and Melbourne. Armenians have a long history of filmmaking, with iconic filmmakers such as Sergei Parajanov and Rouben Mamoulian taking centre stage in the last century. Contemporary filmma

kers both from the homeland and the diaspora tell the stories of the Armenian people, their ancient Armenian history, rich culture, their struggles and triumphs. Through these stories, the Armenian Film Festival Australia hopes to entertain and inspire, challenge perspectives and open dialogue about the many issues facing Armenians today. The festival is an initiative of Hamazkaine Armenian Educational & Cultural Society - Shant Chapter and is run by a passionate group of film-loving volunteers.

APRIL 24 marks the 111th anniversary of the start of the Armenian Genocide, one day before Australians commemorate ANZAC day. Today's Australian Financial Review has featured a major story on the ANZAC connection to the Armenian Genocide - a story of Australia's relief efforts to rescue and care for survivors of the Armenian Genocide. This relief effort was Australia's first major humanitarian campaign, mobilising all parts of society. This story was featured in our 2024 opening night film, THE GOLDEN CHAIN OF MERCY.

We remember the 1.5 million Armenians who perished in the Armenian Genocide and acknowledge the brave Australians who came to their aid.

Australian witnesses and Anzac rescuers saw the Armenian Genocide firsthand in Turkey in 1915, yet their legacy of “fighting for humanity” remains unrecognised.

Congratulations to friend of the festival Sev Ohanian on becoming the first Armenian-American to be nominated for Best Picture Oscar for his film SINNERS. Sinners has also made history as the most-nominated film of all time, with 16 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan.

Sev Ohanian was a guest of the Armenian Film Festival Australia in 2019 with his film Searching and we’ve thrilled to see his achievements!

In more good news from The Academy, Madeline Sharafian has received her second Oscar nomination for directing animated film ELIO.

We can't wait to watch the Academy Award ceremony on 15 March!

Sev Ohanian has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture as a producer of SINNERS, alongside fellow producers Ryan Coogler and Zinzi Coogler.

SINNERS has also made Oscar history, becoming the most-nominated film of all time with 16 nominations. The previous record— 14 nominations— was held by ALL ABOUT EVE, TITANIC, and LA LA LAND. The film has emerged as one of the year’s most celebrated films, grossing approximately $368 million worldwide while earning numerous nominations and wins from major industry guilds and organizations.

Sev Ohanian’s nomination represents a major breakthrough for Armenian representation at the highest level of global cinema as he becomes the first Armenian-American in the 21st century to be nominated for Best Picture. Hank Moonjean who was of Armenian descent was nominated for Best Picture in 1989.

The Armenian Film Society, in partnership with Warner Bros. Pictures and Gold House, hosted the Los Angeles premiere of SINNERS in IMAX in April 2025.

The 2026 Academy Awards will be held on March 15, 2026 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
