I have a story to tell and am seeking the help of someone "out there" to assist me in saving the lives of women and children in Papua New Guinea. Around 7 years ago I learned that 1-in-28 mothers or babies die in childbirth in PNG. Here in Australia this compares with 1-in-10,000. I was horrified and vowed to do something to help. Since that day, I have been sending Baby Bundles to all major ports
throughout PNG. From there they are picked up by local Rotarians and distributed into remote villages and Health Centres. I have now established a supply chain which reaches into most areas throughout the country and send 100 units per month. These are made up from donations from beautiful caring people all over south-east Queensland. A Birthing Kit is an assortment of items as designed by a Specialist Obstetrician/Gynacologist from Sydney. It consists of;
A sheet of plastic to be placed on the floor - under the mother in labour;
Two pieces of string - to tie the umbilical cord;
A one-sided razor blade - to cut the umbilical cord;
A pair of rubber gloves - for the VBA [Village Birth Attendee] to wear;
A cake of soap - hygene! As you can see, conditions in PNG are very different to those here in Aust. I also include a set of baby clothes and clean linen/bunny rugs in which to wrap the newborn. Over the years, I have been assisted by Rotary DIK Brisbane. However, Rotary DIK have now changed their policies and will no longer include my boxes in their containers sent monthly to PNG. I'm desperately trying to find some commercial enterprise which sends goods from Brisbane to PNG and would be prepared to allow me approx 1 cubic metre of space in their container to include boxes of Baby Bundles. A beautiful gentleman, Justin Connolly, is doing just this and I've sent 10 boxes in his container of motor mechanical parts. These have been labelled with the phone number and name of the person in PNG, Moses, who will collect these from the shipping wharf and distribute them thru the Susu Mamas for their training programmes run in Lae, Goroka, and Hagen. You're a hero! If anyone out there can help, you'd also be a hero and would be saving the lives of many women and babies. Thank you for spending the time to read this. Yours in caring.
