Happy Retirement Kerri!

On behalf of the Australian South Sea Islander United Council โ€“ Independent Rockhampton & District Inc., we extend our sincere congratulations to ASSIUC Life Member, Kerri Dorman, on her retirement from Rockhampton Regional Council, marking the close of an impressive career spanning almost fortyโ€‘three years.

Throughout her career, Kerri served as an Administration Supervisor for various General Managers and witnessed many changes across the organisation, including different mayors, councillors, and colleagues. Among her many memorable moments, Kerri has shared that a highlight was seeing both her sons, Jasiah and Caleb, gain employment with Rockhampton Regional Council.

With her husband Darryl having retired at the beginning of 2025 from Rockhampton Regional Council, Kerri now joins him in this next chapter. We wish you all the very best in your retirementโ€”may you enjoy a wellโ€‘earned rest.

Happy retirement, Kerri!

Thank you

๐Ÿ“ฃ Donโ€™t Miss It โ€“ Final Weeks of the Cane Exhibition! ๐ŸŒพ

The Cane Exhibition at the Rockhampton Museum of Art is nearing its close, finishing on Sunday, 21 June 2026 โ€” and now is the perfect time to visit.

This powerful exhibition offers a unique opportunity to engage with and learn more about the rich history and culture of Australian South Sea Islander (ASSI) communities. Through art, storytelling, and lived experiences, Cane invites reflection, understanding, and connection.

One of the exhibition highlights was the Right of the Reply Panel held on Saturday, 7 March 2026, where community members Imelda Miller, Jacob McQuire, and Joella Warkill shared moving excerpts from their exhibition essays. Their voices bring depth and personal insight into the stories behind the exhibition.

๐Ÿ“– Continue the journey: Take the time to read the essays by Joella Warkill and Imelda Miller via the link below and explore their perspectives in full.

Why does the 2026 Census Matter for Australian South Sea Islanders ๐ŸŒบ and why itโ€™s important to finding your family and Blackbird.
The Queensland Governmentโ€™s 2021 Census snapshot recorded only 5,562 Australian South Sea Islanders in Queensland โ€” but our communities know our story is much bigger than a number.

Many of our people hold multiple identities โ€” Australian South Sea Islander, Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, Pacific Islander and other cultural backgrounds. You do not have to choose one part of yourself over another.

At Blackbird โ€“ Finding Family, we see every day how important identity, reconnection and visibility are for our families. Our work focuses on helping people gather family history, reconnect across generations, share stories, and strengthen cultural connections between Australia and our Melanesian communities across the Pacific.

Identifying on the Census matters because it helps make our communities visible.

That visibility supports:
๐ŸŒŠ family reconnection work
๐ŸŒฟ community programs on the ground
๐Ÿค future opportunities for our young people
๐Ÿ“– stronger recognition of our history and contributions

Importantly, this also supports the long-standing advocacy and policy work being led by QUASSIC and Australian South Sea Islander community leaders, who continue working to ensure our people are recognised, counted and heard.
A must read is their powerful report, Research into the Lived Experiences of Australian South Sea Islander People. Queensland United Australian South Sea Islander Council Inc - Quassic Inc

Every person who identifies helps tell a fuller story of who we are today.
In 2026, we encourage our families to proudly identify as Australian South Sea Islander โ€” alongside all the identities that make us who we are.

Our stories matter. Our families matter. Being counted matters. Let us know if you will identify.. I will be ๐ŸŒบ
