A Positive Impact on Ocuka Village
Wajoli Kindergarten and Primary School recently organised Clean Up Ocuka Day, an initiative aimed at improving the environment while teaching students valuable lessons about sustainability. Primary students year 4 and 5 actively participated in the event, collecting an impressive 444 kilograms of plastic waste!
Taking part in this clean-up helped students develop a sense of responsibility and teamwork. By physically removing plastic waste, they saw firsthand how pollution affects their surroundings. This hands-on experience reinforced the importance of proper waste disposal and environmental stewardship. It also boosted their confidence, showing them that their efforts can make a real difference in their community.
Clean Up Ocuka Day directly aligns with the Caring for Our Environment curriculum. Students applied classroom lessons about plastic pollution, one-use plastics, and recycling in a real-world setting. They learned how plastic waste accumulates and discussed sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics.
Ocuka village benefited greatly from the students’ work. Removing 444 kilograms of plastic waste helped prevent pollution, which can harm livestock, crops, and water sources. A cleaner environment also reduces health risks and makes public spaces safer and more pleasant for all residents.
By leading the clean-up, students set an example for the community, encouraging better waste management practices among local residents.
This event was more than just a clean-up—it was a practical and educational experience, helping students become environmental champions in their school and community. Through education and action, they are shaping a cleaner, greener future for Ocuka Village.
