agenda for next week with the recommendation to close Charlotte St has just lobbed.
Most of us who pay rates have just had our rate notices in the mailbox. It's about now we start questioning what we actually get for our rates.
But let's spend $2million to close a very wide road which has ample room for two car lanes, bike paths and parallel parking each side.
Let's funnel hundreds of cars down heritage Elm Grove with it's lovely tree lined canopy. I thought we wanted to protect tree canopies. Goodness knows they plonk in around 800 trees a year. It is all performative. All box ticking. All KPIs.
(Can cite numerous examples of trying to get council to attend to damaged trees, trees being planted and pulled out within weeks because the council approved a planning permit to the adjacent property and the trees were in the way of access, and lack of consultation with residents)
If you haven't noticed, Elm Grove is very narrow.
Most people would rate Elm Grove among Richmond's best streets. Many of us would love to live there.
At Tuesday night's meeting the arguments were compelling against this pocket park and the knock on effects for surrounding streets and small businesses. Impressed with the presentations from many.
There are a number of small businesses in Swan St and Church St that rely on access parking to visit their businesses. Clients can't park on Swan St or Church St so rely on access to Charlotte and the council car park via Church St.
Are we going to be happy when every shop front along Swan St from Church St and Charles St is a 3am closing bar? Guess then the neighbours will be complaining about noise.
Even people in Charlotte St acknowledge there are traffic management issues.
But instead of addressing them the council has written to VicPol to ask police to fine drivers who will be turning when they are not allowed to or going the wrong way up streets. Buck-passing.
It would be laughable if it wasn't so funny.
It's a joke that none of these current Melba councils will be there after November yet they want to push this through. Spend the $ on the leaky library. This isn't the legacy you think it is. It is divisive.
