A variably sized tree to 1-12m high and up to 5m wide. Yellow bird- and insect-attracting flowers. Floral parts persist on the fruits. Flowers occur September to April. Fruits are a woody follicle clustered to form a hairy, cone-like structure.
Stiff, green-grey, leaves with a notched and pointed tip.
Prefers well-drained soils and a full-sun or part-shade position.
Suitable as a shade, screen or windbreak tree in coastal areas. Flowers and fruits are favoured by many birds.
Avoid adding rich fertilisers.
