Now more than ever is the BEST time to be planting trees - adding to the canopy, providing shelter and food for birds and insects.

SILVER BANKSIA - BANKSIA MARGINATA in stock and available this SUNDAY AUGUST 30
A variably sized tree to 1-12m high and up to 5m wide. Yellow bird- and insect-attracting flowers. Floral parts persist on the fruits. Flowers occur September to April. Fruits are a woody follicle clustered to form a hairy, cone-like structure.
Stiff, green-grey, leaves with a notched and pointed tip.
Prefers well-drained soils and a full-sun or part-shade position.
Suitable as a shade, screen or windbreak tree in coastal areas. Flowers and fruits are favoured by many birds.
Avoid adding rich fertilisers.

A reminder that Council's Listening Post is coming up at Wirrng Wirrng (Queenscliff Hub) on Monday 31 August from 5 pm – 6 pm.
🌿 The session will focus on our environment pillar.
🗣 The Listening Post is an opportunity for the community to contribute to the Climate Emergency Response Plan (CERP) process. To build on the many strengths of the CERP, and in line with continual improvement, we want to hear your insights on key climate inputs that should or must be considered as part of the review process.
Councillors and key Council Officers will be there to listen.
Your feedback will help inform the CERP review.

🌿 The Climate Emergency Response Plan (CERP) is about to undergo a 5-year review.

🤝 The review will recognise the significant progress made since the plan was introduced, including the integration of climate action across Council’s policies, operations and decision-making, as well as QCAN’s important contribution to developing and advancing the original plan.

🗣 To support this process, Council has engaged Nation Partners to assist with community engagement activities. The review will seek community feedback on key issues such as climate adaptation, resilience, emissions reduction and collaborative action, while clarifying what Council can influence, what reporting pillars have been established, and what lies outside Council's control.

H5N1 avian influenza has now been detected across the Corangamite region from Peterborough to the Bellarine.

We acknowledge that many people will be feeling deep sadness about the arrival of H5N1 Bird Flu to Victoria and the impending loss of our wildlife.

If you come across a sick or dead bird, please don’t touch it or move it. The best thing you can do is avoid, record and report.

➡️ AVOID: Keep away from sick or dead birds, wildlife and their environment.

➡️ RECORD: Take note of what you see and where. If it’s safe, take a photo or video.

➡️ REPORT: 5 or more sick or dead wild birds together, or any single sick or dead seabird, waterbird, shorebird, bird of prey or marine mammal.

Keeping pets safe:

Another great opportunity to show your support for our feathered friends of the Bellarine

Local volunteer group Bellarine Hooded Plover Volunteers and Birdlife Australia are running two workshops on Frday September 11 at Point Lonsdale Surf Life Saving Club

The first workshop will help you learn how to identify our Beach-nesting birds, the threats they face, and how you can help protect them.

The second will look at strategies for speaking with the public about and the work of volunteers - a really important skill. Places are limiyed for this workshop, so please register early , if you are interested.

You can attend both or either workshop

f you're looking for a sturdy , low maintenance shrub for your garden - COAST POMADERRIS may be just what you want.

It's a brilliant shrub that tolerates coastal conditions and it's a hard worker when it comes to supporting and restoring habitat for birds and pollinators.

Pomaderris paniculosa
An attractive, soft, rusty-tinged shrub 1-2m high and 1-2m wide.
Flowers occur from October to November. Occurs along coastlines and coastal cliffs. Suitable for well-drained sandy soils in full sun or part shade. Tolerates salt spray and limestone.
This species plays an important role in coastal and lowland ecosystems, forming part of the mid-storey shrub layer.
Its dense branching provides shelter for small birds and insects, while its profuse flowering supports pollinators
Coast Pomaderris pairs well with species such as Leptospermum laevigatum, Olearia axillaris, Banksia integrifolia, Correa alba, and understorey plants like Lomandra longifolia and Dianella revoluta.
These combinations reflect natural coastal plant communities and provide structure and resilience in the garden.

When you buy from our nursery and plant species indigenous to the Bellarine you help restore habitat for wildlife. We can all play a part supporting our wonderful birds , bees, butterflies and more by planting species that occur naturally in the Swan Bay catchment.
Our gardens look wonderful too.
Correa var. reflexa (Heathland Form: red)
Attractive small shrub 1-2m high and 1-2m wide.
Crimson flowers with green-yellow tips are nectar producing.
Correas prefer well-drained soils in a full-sun or part-shade position. They respond well to pruning after flowering. The flowers are bird attracting.
