Around 35 people (and some dogs!) enjoyed the QPRC and Queanbeyan Landcare World Environment Day walk this morning along the Queanbeyan River.

The groups learned about the history of the river and surrounds and identifying native birds and plants. One group was lucky enough to even spot a platypus! Waterwatch (thanks Dylan) provided a very informative talk and display on not only the many insects and bugs that inhabit the river but also the rakali and platypus.

A hot cuppa and some sweet treats supplied by QPRC was appreciated on this cold morning and finished off a very interesting walk.

Don’t forget to come along to our World Environment Day events this Saturday 6 June!

We’re hosting an educational walk along the Queanbeyan River on Saturday morning. Come along to learn about our local ecosystems, waterbugs, and the native species around Queanbeyan. If you’re lucky, you might see a platypus! We have partnered with Queanbeyan Landcare and Waterwatch for this event. Meet us at the end of Dane Street in Queanbeyan at 9:30am.

On Saturday afternoon we’re hosting a Waterbug Survey at Turallo Creek and McMahon Lakes in Bungendore. You’ll learn how to catch and identify waterbugs and find out how they help our rivers. Meet us at McMahon Lake off McMahon Drive, near the Bungendore Skate Park, from 1:30pm to 3:30pm.

A great turn out of 14 local Jerrabomberra residents and long-time Queanbeyan Landcare volunteers made the first Brudenell Pond Gully working bee a success. Clearing privet, cotoneaster, hawthorn, briar rose and blackberry, the w**d clearing has provided much needed light and space to encourage natural regeneration of native species.

The group worked tirelessly over 3 hours, with a break for yummy homemade morning tea, to make a significant visual impact on a w**d suppressed area of Stringybark Bushland Reserve.

QPRC has recently approved conservation works along the gully flowing into Brudenell Pond Jerrabomberra. There are further working bees planned so stay tuned to our page or check out https://www.queanbeyanlandcare.org.au/ to find out when the next one (or any of our other workings bees) will be.
