Reconciliation Week has begun. ❤️

We’ve got a week full of activities across our Kings Cross and Bondi community service centres, bringing our community together to listen, learn and connect.

Some of these moments will take place in our refreshed Mob Space. We caught up with artist, while he was painting the mural to hear about his process and what it meant to collaborate with Mob Space visitors on the final piece.

Stay tuned as we share more throughout the week.

Today marks National Sorry Day, acknowledging the Stolen Generations Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children forcibly removed from their families between the mid-1800s and 1980s and the tabling of the 'Bringing Them Home' report in 1997.

Healing Foundation has named this year's theme as 'From Sorry to Action', calling us forward.

As Reconciliation Week begins tomorrow, today is a moment of remembrance. Wayside recommits to standing with First Nations people, listening deeply and with love.

Volunteers Week may be coming to a close, but our gratitude lasts all year ❤️

Below are just a few highlights from a wonderful week of coming together and celebrating our volunteers! From the Archibald visit and Sydney Opera House tour to the Kings Cross tour and afternoon tea.

All of us at Wayside want to say thank you to every incredible volunteer who gives their time, energy and heart to our community. You make a difference every single day and we couldn’t do it without you!

May is Domestic Violence Prevention Month

Many in Wayside Chapel's community have felt the impact of domestic and family violence either directly or through generational ripples of trauma.

We stand together to raise awareness, break the silence, and offer support. Everyone deserves to feel safe. Our Women’s Space is a place of safety and connection, where people are reminded that they are not alone.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic, family, or sexual violence, professional help is available 24/7:

In an emergency, call 000

This National Volunteer Week (May 18-24), we want to celebrate and thank the incredible people who make the community at Wayside Chapel possible.

For the past 10 years, John and Jenny Collins have faithfully travelled each week from Helensburgh to Kings Cross to volunteer at Wayside Chapel - welcoming visitors in our Community Café, supporting the front desk, and helping provide showers, clothing and connection for people doing it tough.

Since starting their volunteer journey with Wayside in 2016, the retired couple have each contributed more than 1,200 hours of service. But for John and Jenny, volunteering has never been about the numbers.
💬 “I love the community, the people, they have taught me so much as I have helped them,” says Jenny.
John reflects on the importance of human connection:
💬 “These people often feel isolated and alone… The great thing about Wayside is being able to just be friendly with people, and that is a really big ministry.”

John and Jenny's story is a reminder that volunteering is not only about giving back – it’s about showing up, listening, connecting and building community.

To John, Jenny, and every single Wayside vollie at our Bondi Beach and Kings Cross Community Service Centres: thank you. We simply could not do this without you!

Today marks the start of National Volunteer Week, and our staff has taken a moment to thank the absolute backbone of Wayside Chapel - our incredible Wayside Vollies! ❤️

This year’s theme is "Your Year to Volunteer," and at Wayside, we see that in action every single day. Whether you’re serving a meal at the community cafe, greeting someone with a smile at the front desk, or supporting us behind the scenes, you make our mission of 'no us and them' a reality.

To all our vollies who gives their time, heart, and energy to our community: thank you. You are the reason Wayside remains a place of belonging and community for all.

Some occasions at Wayside command we dance and party loudly. Mother’s Day is different. It’s complicated for our visitors, to say the least. So many of our mothers are without their children. So many of our people have lost their mothers and some don’t have much in their history that could produce happy memories.

Today we honour those experiences, and we remember the mothers who go without for others, who make things work, who stretch their resources, who run the household, who look after children while often in casual or unstable work.

Let’s take this time to not only remember mothers, but all the mother figures and women who have helped get us through. 💞
