Southern Ocean Marine Alliance

Southern Ocean Marine Alliance Protecting the south west environment, to protect parts of our coastline turning sections into thriving marine parks.

Have now joined with the Portland Marine and Land Alliance to protect the land and Gunditjmara Sea Country.

Look at these guys loving our coastline. Let’s keep it free from anything that will interrupt their fabulous lives.

Thanks god for the Gunditjmara for protecting these eels and to Michael Noah for capturing it. They have a long and interesting journey.

This is why we all need to step up against multinational companies blasting our precarious ocean ecosystems. Well done to Fight for the Bight Port Fairy for taking a stand in the surf and sand. Only together can we stop this.

Sound is essential to life in the ocean. Whales, dolphins, and many other marine species rely on sound to communicate, navigate, find food, and avoid danger.

But the ocean is becoming increasingly noisy. Shipping traffic, seismic surveys for oil and gas, military sonar, and offshore development all add powerful human-made sounds that travel far underwater. These noises can mask communication, disrupt migration and feeding, cause stress, and in some cases lead to injury or strandings.

Natural sounds like weather and earthquakes are part of ocean life. Human noise is not. As ocean use continues to grow, protecting quiet spaces and reducing harmful noise is critical to safeguarding marine ecosystems and ensuring a healthy ocean for all.

Well done Ben, Carli, Lisa and the legends who stood on the sand and demanded protection of this remarkable coastline. https://www.facebook.com/share/1C9wgYmEbH/?mibextid=wwXIfr

We did it! Another seismic blasting project stopped thanks to the power of community 💪

Near 15,000 public submissions were received by the government regulator in relation to a proposed destructive seismic blasting project 12km south of Port Fairy in Victoria. Seismic blasting poses major risks to marine wildlife, and can even deafen whales. Yet Labor was prepared to sell our oceans off to the highest bidder for seismic exploration which would have occurred through endangered southern right whale habitat and within key foraging habitat for the endangered pygmy blue whale.

The Greens are proud to have played an important role in helping the community achieve this massive win. It’s shocking that Labor and the LNP continue to open up our precious oceans for fossil fuels exploration, but this win just goes to show that we all have a part to play in helping ensure a safe future for all of us — we can fight these battles, and we can win!

We know that our coastlines cannot continue to be put at risk for the sake of new fossil fuels that we simply do not need and despite this win, the fight is far from over. Late last year, Labor announced it intends to hand over acres of ocean in the Otway Basin, between Victoria and north-west Tasmania, to the fossil fuel industry to exploit in a time of climate emergency.
