Just the opening paragraph of Screw Nice speaks to something that comes up often at our fortnightly community gatherings - what do we do when we’re a small group of people facing systems that feel enormous and unmovable?

It’s easy to feel powerless in the face of that and to wonder whether meeting for a coffee or talking about a book can make any meaningful difference.

But every mass movement has grown through conversations between people. Someone says, “That’s messed up,” someone else agrees or asks a question, and from there they talk about why, what could be different, and what they might be able to do about it. Then they talk to the next person, and the conversation grows.

That’s part of why we keep holding our coffee mornings and book groups. They give us somewhere to meet, share what we’re thinking, and hear what other people have noticed.

Our book group doesn’t have a formal structure because we prefer to see where the book takes the conversations. A conversation may not change anything we can see that day, but each one is an invitation into a bigger conversation about the kind of world we want and how we might help create it.

Our next book, Screw Nice by Amy Remeikis, starts this Sunday. For our first meet-up, we’ll be discussing the Introduction and Chapters 1 to 3.

Just a reminder we don’t have our usual community gathering on Saturday. Instead we’d love you to come and gather with us at It's OK on the Macleay on Sunday!

This wonderful family event celebrates diversity and inclusion across the Macleay Valley and surrounding areas.

We’ll have a stall there, and it’ll be great to see some familiar faces while we support this important community event. 💛🌈🏳️‍⚧️

A petition run by Amnesty International Australia was tabled in Federal Parliament today, calling for Australia to stop its weapons, components, and resources contributing to violations of international law, and to oppose illegal Israeli settlements.

Outside stood the Wall of Tears - an installation bearing the names of more than 18,000 Palestinian children killed in Gaza since October 2023 - a stark reminder that behind petitions and policy demands, are human lives.

A petition being tabled doesn’t, by itself, change government policy, but it does put this demand on parliamentary record.

Sometimes signing a petition, or sending an email, can feel very small against the scale of what is happening. Today is a reminder that those actions accumulate, and together they make it harder for governments to pretend people don’t care.

Out of the Shadows begins at 5:30am at the Salty Crew Kiosk, Town Beach, Port Macquarie. Dress warmly, wear flat, comfortable shoes, and bring whatever helps you feel supported - a friend, a family member, or simply yourself.
We'll walk together to the Amphitheatre for a sunrise ceremony with speakers and a moment to honour those we've lost - a morning of connection, understanding and hope. Lifeline staff and support workers will be there throughout.
