This question probably sums us up better than anything else.

We’re Amnesty International Port Macquarie, a group of local people who care about what’s happening here and what’s happening in the wider world.

Housing. Palestine. First Nations justice. Refugees. LGBTQIA+ rights. Climate. Protest rights.

They’re not the same issues, and we don’t pretend they are. But they do keep bringing us back to the same kinds of questions about who gets heard, who gets protected, who gets left out, who gets to feel safe, and whose dignity matters.

We don’t think caring about what happens somewhere else means caring less about what happens here. In fact, we think the two belong in the same conversation.

So we get together. We read. We ask questions. We drink coffee and eat banana cake. We learn. And we try to work out what we can actually do.

After all, why are we here if not for each other? 💛

This week is Homelessness Week and housing is a human right.

But homelessness isn’t just about housing.

It’s also about whether we believe everyone deserves safety, dignity and a place to belong.

It’s the same question we ask when we speak about Palestine, about First Nations justice, about refugees, about climate justice: what does it look like to build a world where every person’s dignity matters and everyone has a safe place to call home?

Today, choose one small act of solidarity. Learn something, speak up, support a local service, challenge a harmful stereotype, write to your elected representative.

Because justice is built through the everyday choices we make and the ways we show up.

After all, why are we here if not for each other? 💛

This morning a group of us sat down together to write letters as part of the Indigenous Youth Justice campaign.

There’s something fitting about doing it this way. Amnesty itself began as a letter-writing campaign in 1961, when a lawyer named Peter Benenson asked ordinary people to write on behalf of two Portuguese students jailed for raising a toast to freedom. The small groups of people who answered that call became the foundation of the organisation we’re part of today.

Our letters will be going to the federal Attorney-General, asking the government to establish a National Youth Justice Framework that sets minimum standards across the country, and ends the torture and cruel treatment of children in detention.

It’s easy to feel small in the face of the injustices around us, but writing alongside each other was a reminder: why are we here, if not for each other? 💛

A few months back, our community questionnaire response showed a real desire for cultural learning and active allyship, so we’re really pleased to share these TWO upcoming events happening THIS weekend!

On Saturday, Birpai woman, Arly Gili Mehan, is hosting a special cultural training designed for community members who want to strengthen their cultural capacity. It's an immersive experience that covers deep listening, connected and compassionate communication, relational intelligence, and decolonising practices — all the kinds of work that help us build and maintain the meaningful relationships that make genuine community possible. Then on Sunday we have the opportunity to take meaningful action for Amnesty International Australia's Indigenous Youth Justice campaign, calling on the Federal Attorney-General to meet Australia's international human rights obligations by establishing national minimum standards through a National Youth Justice Framework.
