#5 Another resource at our Uniting Country SA hub is the second-hand clothing options. Buying preloved clothing is a great way to save money, and give a clothing item a second life, instead of ending up as garbage.

Did you know? More than 200,000 tones of clothing end up in Australian landfill every year.

If you are looking to stretch your budget, consider exploring second-hand clothing options. You might be surprised at the great finds. With a lot of our second hand stores the money usually goes back into the community.

#4 - I had so much fun with today’s find, and there will be a few more posts to come! Our local Uniting Country SA team offers so many amazing supports and services.

Today, I challenged myself to shop on a $50 budget at the pantry available through Uniting Country SA Peterborough. I wanted to see how much I could get for a family with kids and what I could create with the buy.
Food is a necessity, but unfortunately more people are feeling the pressure of the rising cost of living. This challenge was a great reminder of how valuable community resources are.

The pantry is open to EVERYONE

Today, I spent $48.90 and picked up:
- School snacks for the week
- Breakfast items
- Ingredients for at least three family dinners (spaghetti bolognese, chicken with potatoes and vegetables, and tune mornay)
- Toilet paper and washing powder
- A couple of desserts the kids can help make
- Spaghetti and noodles for lunches
- And by adding a few ingredients I already have in the cupboard, every item I purchased will be put to good use.

I am excited to share the amazing work our community hub does to support the local people. If you haven’t visited before, I encourage you to check it out. It’s a friendly, welcoming and relaxed environment.

#3 The cost of living can have a real impact on our mental health, which is why community and connection matters more than ever.

We’re lucky to have so many low cost / free community events, giving people the chance to check out local activities without needing to commit to joining a group. Groups appreciate the support, and we love seeing people come along and make all the behind the scenes work worthwhile.

It may not always be something you’d normally choose, but you never know what you might learn, who you might meet, or how good it can feel to simply connect with others. Each year is a great opportunity to try something different, build the community, and support each other.

So, follow along with these groups and find some great activities and fun 👇

#2 Did someone say Op shop

I’ve always loved op shops, browsing through the knick-knacks, wondering about the homes the items once came from, and giving things a second life instead of seeing them go to waste.

With the cost-of-living rising, they are a really good resource and sell so many different things. We are lucky enough to have a great op shop in town that still holds the old-school op shop prices.

There are clothes galore, school uniforms, household items and little reminders of childhood throughout the shelves.

For many people, op shops help ease some of the financial pressure. A place worth stopping by.
