Last night's Australian Story program on the ABC featured Mohamed Semra, the first person from sub-Saharan Africa to be elected mayor in Australia.

At just 27, Mohamed Semra is not your average mayor. He overcame a childhood stutter and a viral moment in a Melbourne Apple Store to make political history – and he is just getting started.

Youth Conference 2025 — Building Hope With Our Young People

Vulnerable Children in Need Australia is helping raise funds to support the South Sudanese Nuer Youth–Parents Conference, to be held in Perth in early 2026.

This community-led event will bring together young people and parents to bridge the generational gap, strengthen cultural identity, and promote mental health and family unity within the South Sudanese community.

This conference is an important step in strengthening our local community in Perth, as we work together to identify priorities for supporting children affected by hardship, including those connected to the ongoing crisis in South Sudan. By listening directly to our youth, we can ensure that future programs reflect their real needs, their hopes and their ideas for change.

We are seeking to raise $6,000 to help fund the conference. Every contribution will help create a safe, meaningful space for young people to speak, be heard and shape community-led solutions. If we raise more than required, any additional funds will go toward charitable programs identified as priorities through the conference.
