Oceans was the theme for our 8 June meeting, with Darren leading the session. During the warm-up, Emily’s Word/Phrase of the Day, High Water Salinity, featured repeatedly in a lively and engaging story. Well done to everyone who joined in. Kym’s speech highlighted the benefits of volunteering and also mentioned the upcoming club officer elections later on the agenda. Liz’s Icebreaker speech shared a few personal facts that were new to most attendees. After the break, selected members responded to a series of impromptu speaking topics. Special congratulations to our guest, Mariah, for her excellent response. It was another enjoyable meeting, and we look forward to the next one. Join us on Monday 22nd June at 6.45 for a 7.00 pm start at Dome Coffees, 219–221 Railway Parade, Maylands, opposite the train station.

Last Monday, we met in Bassendean for a combined club meeting with Heritage Towns Toastmasters. The two-minute warning sounded. Chop, chop, hurry, hurry! We took our seats, wondering why the unusual rush. Toastmaster Simon stood before the group, smiled, and asked, “Why rush?” That of course was the meeting theme! Throughout the evening, Simon highlighted loads of reasons for slowing down as he kept the meeting flowing. Yash and Kym delivered well-crafted Icebreaker speeches while the travel-related Table Topics questions gave five lucky members off-the-cuff speaking practice. Judith’s alphabet activity, perhaps the highlight of the night, was hilariously challenging. It took thinking on your feet to another level. After supper, it was time for reports and wrap up from the General Evaluator, Kym and Club President, Lachie. Congratulations to Simon and Kate for winning best Table Topics speech and best speech evaluation. Banyandah members appreciated the opportunity to combine meetings and thank our Heritage Towns friends for their hospitality. We’ll be back at the Dome Coffees Building, 219-221 Railway Pde, Maylands for the next meeting on June 8. See you there!

Where in the world are you? Whether natural or man-made, there’s sure to be a landmark, large or small, nearby to answer that question! “Landmarks”, the famous and not so famous, was the theme for the Banyandah Toastmasters meeting on Monday 11 May 2026. Our venue is the beautiful Maylands landmark, the heritage-listed Old Peninsula Hotel, opposite the train station.
Liz kept the meeting flowing, including snippets of landmark trivia here and there. Did you know that Uluru is taller than the Eiffel Tower? Darren’s prepared speech encouraged better evaluation skills, while Kym delved into characteristics of charismatic speakers. Table Topics “landmark” questions required quick thinking. Amanda’s word of the day, “terrain”, was used by all. Role-holders received valuable feedback and thanks goes to Area Director, Marlese, for her visit and filling the General Evaluator role. Another great Banyandah meeting!

~~~~February and March at Banyandah Toastmasters ~~~~
In February, we ran a fantastic four-week Speechcraft course for 10 people keen to conquer nerves, step up, and build strong public speaking skills through hands-on practice.
It was expertly facilitated by Kym and Ange, with wonderful support from our experienced Toastmasters.
The course was a definite success—10 participants in Week 1 and 10 again in Week 4! A brilliant effort from our Speechcrafters and Toastmasters alike.
March brought our Club International and Evaluation Speech Contests—International was hotly contested by Liz and Amanda, and Evaluation was fiercely contested by Curtis. Thankfully for him, there was no time disqualification!
At our second March meeting, we enjoyed a combined meeting with the Heritage Towns club and two guests from Swan Toastmasters.
What an energetic meeting—such a great vibe, and evaluations seen through fresh eyes. Banyandah will happily reciprocate with a visit to Heritage Towns in the near future!
Banyandah Toastmasters’ meeting on 26 January 2026 was expertly led by Curtis whose Australia Day theme was a culturally and politically sensitive exploration of the topic.
A couple of special Aussie Day segments kept us on our toes – A one-word-about round robin story proved more difficult than anticipated but provided amusement as we failed the filler word test. Craig’s Table Topics questions and the responses were just as entertaining with some great Aussie stories. After the break Amanda added welcome flair to the Meeting Roles and Responsibilities presentation, speaking about her personal experience of performing said roles. Liz’s speech reflected on the lessons she learned as a Speechcraft coordinator and provided useful tips for the upcoming 2026 course coordinators. Two truths and a lie, the second special Aussie Day segment, had us guessing the lie from three “facts” about ourselves with chocolate reward for a correct answer. The culmination of our successful Australia Day meeting resulted in the recognition of two members’ educational achievements; Amanda for Engaging Humour Level 3 and Kym for Persuasive Influence Path completion. The cherry on top - signing Cameron as a Banyandah member.
What a great meeting!
Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi!
We had a great meeting last Monday, our first for 2026. With Liz as our Toastmaster and the theme of Goals for 26, we had great information about goal setting and members shared some of their goals during Table Topics.
Liz’s dream of having a decluttered house and Darren’s of having an organised office (Read it, Scan it, Shred it) inspired at least one member to get to work next morning effecting calmness after a surface declutter
We too heard of Curtis’s goals for 2026 which focussed on 4 areas physical, spiritual, work, home. And from Kym, the story of two cats whose love, warmth and antics provide joy to life. Again food for thought for all of us.
Not only do we get to learn about public speaking, we make warm social connections, we also gain wonderful inspiration from each other! How lucky are we?
We were a small group on Monday, including our guest Emad. There can be power in the small. We were grateful to all who were at the meeting and look forward to more great meetings where people are focussed on their goals, connecting with each other and having fun doing it. Banyandah Toastmasters the best kept secret we would like to share with others.
Last night Banyandah Toastmasters celebrated Superhero's Day! We had doctors, treasurers, Dome hospitality workers, footballers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle & some external underwear wearing nameless super hero all honoured at our meeting. Not only that some people had procrastination & sleeping as their superpowers! What a night! We had great fun, all in the name of improving our superpower, our Public Speaking Skills.
