This past weekend, the Maaman Djenna Koorl participants gathered on Country for their Men’s Retreat during Makuru, the season of rain and renewal ⛅️🌿🌧️
Coordinated by our Men’s Program team , Ash and Tyson, the retreat provided an opportunity for the men to connect through walks on Country, traditional fire-making, facilitated workshops with Elders and experts, and shared stories and experiences through yarning.

Highlights included a meaningful Welcome to Country from Uncle Richard Walley, a memorable and humorous visit from guest speaker Uncle Derek Nannup, and shared wisdom from elders, Uncles; Des Blurton, Lyall Garlett, Simon Forrest, Danny Ford and, Brett Hill. Through this time together, the men began forming and strengthening relationships that will continue throughout their journey as part of the Maaman Djenna Koorl brotherhood.

Held at the beginning of each cohort, the retreat creates a culturally safe and supportive space for participants to connect away from the work environment. It provides the foundation for trust, belonging, and cultural grounding, ensuring the men begin their WAALI journey with a clear mind, strong connections, and a shared sense of purpose.

This week for our Alumni Highlight we’re proud to celebrate Dylan Murphy-Pettit, one of our most recent Maaman Djenna Koorl Program graduates!🎓✨
Driven to deepen his connections with local community and strengthen his cultural understanding, Dylan embraced every opportunity the program offered—from traditional cultural activities and leadership development to building meaningful relationships with fellow Maaman Djenna Koorl program participants, elders and community.
Reflecting on his journey, Dylan says the program strengthened his confidence as a leader, expanded his support network, and reinforced the importance of leading with cultural integrity. We welcome Dylan as one of the newest members of the WAALI Alumni and we are very excited to witness Dylans leadership journey and future accomplishments! 👏🏽👏🏽

Reflecting on some meaningful days on the Gold Coast at the 2026 AIATSIS Summit ✈️
The WAALI team felt truly honoured to listen to so many inspiring speakers and changemakers. It was also special to see and reconnect with WAALI Elders and alumni, while building new connections along the way.
From an insightful visit to the Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre to learning on Country, every moment was memorable — but a true highlight was hearing from Gail Mabo and Kaleb Mabo, daughter and grandson of Eddie “Kioki” Mabo, who continue to uphold his powerful legacy.
Grateful for the knowledge shared, the stories told, and the connections made. May AIATSIS Summit 2027 be just as special ✨

Alumni highlight: Elisha Jacobs-Smith 🌿
Elisha’s reflections from the Maaman Djenna Koorl program speak to the power of connection, visibility, and the responsibility of carrying leadership forward for the next generation. From building strong bonds with other men and Elders, to embracing visibility as a proud Q***r Noongar man, his journey is a reminder that leadership comes in many forms — and that showing up fully as yourself can create space for others to do the same.
