CET is seeking electrical contractors to host Certificate II in Electrotechnology students for four-week work placements.

These placements give students valuable real-world exposure to the electrical industry before they move into an apprenticeship.

For contractors, hosting a pre-apprenticeship student is a practical way to support the next generation, give back to the trade and potentially identify future talent for the business.

With skilled workers in ongoing demand, work placements play an important role in helping students move from training into real industry pathways.

Employers should be aware of upcoming changes to superannuation payment requirements.

From 1 July 2026, employers will need to pay superannuation contributions within seven calendar days of paying employee wages and salaries.

For businesses that currently pay super less frequently, this is a significant change and worth preparing for now. Electrical contractors should review payroll systems, cash flow planning and internal procedures ahead of the deadline.

Further information is available via the ATO and Fair Work Ombudsman. ECA WA members can also contact ECA Legal for guidance.

ECA WA is seeking expressions of interest from electrical contractors who would like to be part of a new Residential Committee.

The committee will bring together around 10 representatives from the residential electrical sector to discuss the real issues contractors and electricians are seeing in their day-to-day work.

Meetings will be monthly, practical and focused, running for one hour in the morning with a light breakfast provided.

This is an opportunity to raise common challenges, share feedback and help shape support for residential electrical contractors across WA.

To register your interest, email Del Chinotto at [email protected] or contact the ECA WA Technical Hotline.

A WA electrician has been fined $5,000 after a wiring error at a Geraldton home resulted in electric shocks.

WA’s energy safety regulator has again reinforced the message to industry: all electrical work must be checked and tested.

For contractors, this isn’t a final “box to tick” — it’s a critical safeguard. One incorrect connection can create a serious risk for customers, occupants and anyone who touches the installation.

This case is a timely reminder to prioritise proper inspection, verification and testing before anything is energised or handed over.

WA’s energy safety regulator has issued a strong warning to electrical contractors after nearly $30,000 in fines were handed down for dangerous electrical offences at a Thornlie property.

The case involved unsupervised apprentice work and misleading information being provided to authorities. The takeaway for the industry is simple: apprentices must be properly supervised, and contractors must ensure work is carried out safely, correctly and honestly.

These aren’t “paperwork” issues. They’re serious matters that can expose workers, customers and the public to real risk.

A timely reminder to review your supervision, testing and compliance practices and make sure standards are being met on every job.
