hearts4heart Supporting, educating and advocating for Australians and New Zealanders with heart disease.

hearts4heart was founded in 2011 in recognition of 3.4 million Australians living with heart disease. Yet there are clear deficits in the provision of educational resources, prevention strategies and support for the wide range of heart disease that exists. hearts4heart addresses this gap through education and support to all people affected by heart disease. The primary goals of the organisation ar

e to raise awareness of heart disease and for patients to receive equal access to advice, support, education and treatment. For more information visit our website at http://www.hearts4heart.org.au/

❤️ This Heart Week (4–10 May), hearts4heart is encouraging Australians to Never miss a BEAT.

Heart disease remains Australia’s leading cause of death, with one person experiencing a heart attack or stroke every 4 minutes.

This , the Heart Foundation is encouraging you to take a simple but important step towards improving your heart health, because caring for your heart can also help protect your kidneys and support diabetes health, as these are closely connected.

Here’s how you can get involved:

🩺 Book a Heart Health Check with your GP – a 20-minute check-up to assess your risk
⏱️ Find out your Heart Age – a quick 3-minute online tool
💬 Start the conversation – talk to your loved ones about their heart health and risk factors

“I thought I was just tired…”

Jillian didn’t realise her symptoms were something serious, until she needed urgent open-heart surgery.

What she thought was just fatigue turned out to be something far more serious.

As a hearts4heart Advocate and graduate of our Advocacy Training Academy, Jillian is now using her lived experience to raise awareness of heart valve disease and help others recognise the signs earlier. ❤️

The SLOW symptoms of heart valve disease aren’t just a normal part of ageing, they’re often overlooked, but they matter.

Look out for:
🫁 Shortness of breath
💫 Lightheadedness on exertion
⏳ Feeling older than your years
😴 Unusual or ongoing fatigue

A big thank you to New Idea Magazine for helping share Jillian’s story and amplify this important message.

And thank you, Jillian, for using your voice to support others ❤️

❤️ Turning everyday GP visits into opportunities for earlier detection

Our Essential GP Checklist campaign TVC is now available on the hearts4heart YouTube channel.

🫀 Knowing your pulse is simple — and it can make a real difference. ❤️

hearts4heart proudly supports World Pulse Day, a global initiative raising awareness about heart rhythm conditions.

Many arrhythmias develop quietly over time. You may not feel symptoms, until something serious happens. With 1 in 3 people at risk of developing a heart rhythm disorder in their lifetime, awareness truly matters.

Taking a moment to check your pulse and speaking with your GP if something doesn’t feel right can be an important first step in protecting your heart.

Let’s keep the conversation going and prioritise heart health, for ourselves and for those we love. ❤️

hearts4heart is proud to support My Future Selfie in calling for an expanded DNA Screen program to be funded by the Federal Government. 🧬

Take action and write to your local MP to support expanded access to preventive genomic screening:

DNA Screen is a free genomic screening program that uses genomics to help prevent disease by identifying young Australians at very high risk of cancer and heart disease. Early detection saves lives, and reduces long-term healthcare costs. ❤️

During Heart Valve Disease Awareness Week 2026, we launched the SLOW Symptoms campaign to help Australians act sooner on heart valve disease. ❤️

A huge thank you to all the inspiring voices who joined us to put heart health in the national spotlight, and to Heart Valve Voice for helping bring the SLOW Symptoms campaign to Australia for the first time.

📣 Together, we reached millions of Australians to raise awareness of the SLOW symptoms and help speed up our nation’s response to valve disease.

Remember, the SLOW symptoms of heart valve disease are NOT just a normal sign of ageing. Look out for:

🫁 Shortness of breath
💫 Lightheadedness on exertion
⏳ Older than your years
😴 Weary or unusually fatigued

“Heart valve disease can be easy to miss - and that’s what makes it so dangerous. Too many people put symptoms down to ageing or a busy life and delay getting checked.”

Thank you Simon Kennedy MP for helping sound the alarm on Australia’s dangerously SLOW response to heart valve disease during Heart Valve Disease Awareness Week.

Real change takes collaboration. We’re incredibly grateful for the Parliamentary Friends of Heart and Stroke Foundations, whose leadership and advocacy help us make progress where it matters most.

A healthier Australia for people living with heart valve disease starts with awareness - but it requires systemic change across prevention, early detection, diagnosis, management and patient care.

Thank you to our Parliamentary Friends for adding pace to our SLOW campaign. ❤️

Heart valve disease can be slow, silent and too often mistaken for “just getting older”. ⌛❤️

We’re proud to see Heart Valve Disease Awareness Week and the launch of the SLOW Symptoms campaign getting attention in the media, helping more Australians recognise the signs of heart valve disease and act sooner.

Featured in The Senior, this story spotlights Farmer John’s story, why early detection matters and how to use the SLOW acronym to identify the signs of heart valve disease sooner

Thank you Desiree Savage and Nick Powell for helping share this message.

It’s time to speed up Australia’s response to heart valve disease. ❤️⏱️

In 2021, an estimated 600,000 Australians were living with diagnosed heart valve disease - with another 254,000 unaware they had the condition. That’s around 850,000 Australians potentially affected by heart valve disease.

HVD occurs when a valve narrows (stenosis) or leaks (regurgitation), or more rarely, is absent, and its symptoms are often SLOW, silent and mistaken for normal ageing. ⌛

Know the SLOW symptoms of heart valve disease👇

🫁 Shortness of breath
💫 Lightheadedness on exertion
⏳ Older than your years
😴 Weary or unusually fatigued
