Most people are terrified of public speaking.

But here's the irony...

We speak in public every single day.

In meetings.
On Zoom calls.
To clients.
At networking events.
Even introducing ourselves to a room full of strangers.

Public speaking isn't standing on a stage in front of 1,000 people.

It's communicating clearly whenever people are listening.

The better you become at expressing your ideas, the more opportunities tend to come your way.

Communication isn't just a soft skill.

It's a career skill.

Want to know the biggest mistake most speakers make?

They try to answer every question.

Great speakers answer one question exceptionally well.

The more ideas you cram into a presentation, the fewer people remember.

If you want your audience to take action, give them one message that's so clear they can repeat it to someone else on the way home.

Clarity beats complexity.
Every. Single. Time.

Most people think great speakers are born.

They're not.

They're built.

One conversation.
One presentation.
One awkward moment at a time.

Every time you speak, you're collecting data:
• What connected?
• What lost people?
• What made them lean in?

The goal isn't to give a perfect presentation.

The goal is to give a better presentation than the last one.

Small improvements, repeated consistently, create extraordinary communicators.

The fastest way to become a better public speaker?

Stop trying to sound perfect.

Perfection creates distance.
Authenticity builds trust.

The speakers people remember aren't the ones with the biggest vocabulary or the slickest slides.

They're the ones who make you feel like they're talking to you, not at you.

If you make a mistake...
Keep going.

If you lose your place...
Keep going.

If you're nervous...
That's okay. It usually means you care.

Confidence isn't the absence of nerves.

It's speaking anyway.

Every great speaker started as a nervous beginner who refused to quit.

Public speaking isn't about sounding smart.

It's about making people care.

Most people spend hours asking:
"What should I say?"

The better question is:
"What do I want people to remember?"

If your audience only remembers one thing after you've finished speaking, you've done your job.

The best speakers don't overwhelm people with information. They give them one powerful idea, wrap it in a story, and make it impossible to forget.

Whether you're presenting at work, speaking to clients, or simply contributing in a meeting...

Don't try to impress people.

Try to connect with them.

That's what great communicators do.

What a fantastic way to celebrate our 50th anniversary!

As the second oldest Toastmasters club in WA, Sangroper marked the occasion with some incredible speeches from some truly inspiring people.

Vince has been part of the club since 1989 — an absolute legend who shared his journey and the impact Toastmasters has had over the years.

Madeline joined not long after Vince and loved public speaking so much she turned it into a career. Thankfully, she still shares her wisdom and techniques with us today.

Eddy, a long-term member and the 'glue' of the club, shared how the club has preserved though tough times (COVID was rough) and continues to be move forward.

We were also honoured to have Maree Pickens, Program Quality Director for Toastmasters, join us to congratulate the club and present us with some wonderful gifts. And wow… Maree can present!

Desmond Miranda, Club Growth Director for Toastmasters, also recognised the club with a fantastic speech celebrating the strength and longevity of Sangroper.

We’re incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by such knowledgeable, supportive and inspiring people.

Toastmasters is so much more than learning to speak in public. It’s a warm, welcoming community that helps people grow in confidence, communication and leadership.

When you buy IKEA furniture, you don’t start by counting the screws — you first want to know what you’re actually building.

Your audience needs to see the big picture before learning the details.

If you can't explain your key message (the takeaway) in 140 characters or less, keep working.
