NCAM Condemns Antisemitic Attack at Bondi and Stands in Solidarity with the Jewish Community

The National Council of Australian Muslims (NCAM) unequivocally condemns the horrific shooting at Bondi, which targeted members of the Jewish community during a religious festival. We extend our deepest condolences to the victims, their families, and all those affected by this senseless and hateful act of violence. An attack on people gathered to celebrate their faith is an attack on the fundamental right to worship and live without fear, and has no place in our society.

NCAM is deeply saddened by the loss of life and the trauma inflicted on individuals and communities. Violence driven by hatred, particularly antisemitic violence, betrays our shared values and our common humanity. Such acts must be rejected without hesitation and condemned in the strongest possible terms.

NCAM stands in full solidarity with the Jewish community in Sydney and across Australia as they grieve this devastating loss, especially as it occurred during a festival meant to symbolise light, hope, and resilience. We also acknowledge the courage and dedication of emergency services, medical responders, and law enforcement who acted swiftly to protect lives and provide care in the midst of this tragedy.

At this critical moment, NCAM urges the public to remain calm, avoid speculation, and act responsibly. Fear, vilification, and collective blame only deepen harm and fracture social cohesion. We call for an unequivocal rejection of antisemitism, Islamophobia, and all forms of hatred and violence. NCAM also supports strong, effective fi****ms control measures that prioritise public safety and reduce the risk of such weapons being used to inflict mass harm. Preventing access to weapons designed to kill is essential to protecting lives and ensuring the safety of all communities.

NCAM calls on all Australians to stand together in unity, compassion, and solidarity, reaffirming our shared commitment to peace, social harmony, and the safety and dignity of all who call this country home.

NCAM Condemns Pauline Hanson’s Burqa Stunt as Racist, Dangerous, and Deeply Harmful to Muslim Women

The National Council of Australian Muslims (NCAM) condemns Senator Pauline Hanson’s decision to wear a burqa into the Senate chamber, a repeat of her earlier stunt and a racist, deeply disrespectful act targeting Australian Muslims. Using a religious garment as a political prop demeans Muslim women and normalises Islamophobia in one of the nation’s highest institutions. This behaviour is not harmless theatrics but a deliberate attempt to provoke and humiliate.

NCAM Director Sajida Salman said the stunt reflects a broader pattern of racism in Australian politics. “Mocking a religious garment in Parliament sends a message that Muslim women and their identities are fair game,” she said. “It is deeply offensive, dangerous, and fuels prejudice far beyond the Senate chamber.”

This incident occurs against the backdrop of rising Islamophobia, with recent data showing that nearly 75% of victims in reported incidents are Muslim women and girls. These women already face disproportionate levels of harassment and emotional trauma, and public mockery by elected officials only emboldens those who commit abuse. For young Muslim women visible in their faith, the stunt reinforces fear, undermines confidence, and makes everyday public life feel less safe.

NCAM is particularly concerned that racism within Parliament legitimises discrimination throughout the community. When leaders use their platform to ridicule Muslim identity, it sends a signal into schools, workplaces, and public spaces that such behaviour is acceptable. This is not just irresponsible politics; it weakens social cohesion and undermines Australia’s commitment to multiculturalism and respect.

NCAM calls on all parliamentarians to denounce this conduct and ensure that Parliament is never used again to target minorities or mock religious identity. NCAM will continue to stand with Muslim women and urges the government to work collaboratively with Muslim organisations to uphold the dignity, safety, and inclusion of all Australians.
