WORLD HOSPICE AND PALLIATIVE CARE DAY 🧡

Today we recognise the people who provide care, comfort and support to individuals and families facing advanced serious illness.

For many families, palliative care is also part of a much bigger story. There can be difficult conversations, uncertainty, anticipatory grief, precious time together and, eventually, the grief that follows when someone important dies.

At Lionheart, we often meet children and families after that death. We know that the care and conversations that happen before a death can become an important part of a child’s story and their grief.

Today we acknowledge the palliative care professionals, hospice teams, health professionals, carers and families who walk alongside people through some of life’s hardest moments.

Come and say hello to the Lionheart team on Sunday 18 October along Wellington Street. We’ll be there alongside dozens of other organisations from across WA, with live entertainment, rides, food trucks and plenty of family fun throughout the day.

Our CEO Shelly has previously joined Professor Lauren Breen on Catherine Ashton's Critical Info: 'Don’t Be Caught Dead' podcast to talk about children, grief and loss, including the importance of giving children honest information and choices around funerals.

Critical Info recently shared a thoughtful piece exploring how we can prepare and include children in conversations and experiences around funerals. It’s a great reminder that children deserve clear, age-appropriate information about death, dying and what to expect.

Preparing a child doesn’t mean they have to attend. It means helping them understand what might happen, giving them choices, and creating space for their questions. 🦁🧡

🧡 Mental Health Week WA 2026: Taking Control in the Face of Change

Grief can bring enormous change, much of it outside our control.

'Taking control' doesn’t mean feeling positive about something painful. Sometimes, it’s about finding the small things we can have a say in, asking for help, staying connected, making space for grief, and finding routines that help life feel more steady.

At Lionheart, we support children, young people and families to build a life around their grief, with connection, understanding and hope.

Even when you can’t control the changes life and death brings, you don’t have to face them alone. 🦁🧡

Our Youth Grief Advisory Committee came together for their second session this week! 🧡

There was plenty of teamwork, thoughtful conversations about what is and isn’t helpful when you’re grieving, ideas for improving Lionheart programs, and sharing thoughts on some new initiatives. It was also two of our committee members' birthdays, so of course there was cake!

We’re so grateful to have these young voices helping shape what we do for grieving children and teens. 🦁🧡

Dust off your boots, round up your favourite people and get ready for a fabulous night of Dolly, dancing and fun!

We’ve joined forces with our friends at .bar for "A Whole Lot of Dolly", a night celebrating the songs, sparkle and unmistakable spirit of Dolly Parton, with 100% of ticket sales donated to our work at Lionheart! 🧡

Expect live Dolly hits from some of WA’s finest country, folk and roots artists, line dancing, cowboy boots, big hair and plenty of reasons to hit the dance floor. 👢✨

Dolly was renowned for her generosity and support of children, so it feels especially fitting to celebrate her incredible music while helping Lionheart continue to provide free grief support to WA children, teens and families.
