Grief doesn't always look the way we expect.

When adults think about grief, they often picture sadness. But for children, grief can show up in many different ways 🧡

It might look like:
🦁 Anger or frustration
🦁 Being extra silly or energetic
🦁 Worrying about themselves or other people they love
🦁 Difficulty concentrating at school
🦁 Wanting lots of reassurance
🦁 Becoming quieter than usual
🦁 Changes in sleep or appetite

Children often move in and out of their grief. One moment they may be laughing and playing, and the next they may be asking big questions or expressing difficult emotions. This is just one of the areas we explore in our programs at Lionheart.

There is no right way to grieve.

If you're supporting a grieving child, remember that you don't need to have all the answers. Simply being present, listening and creating space for their feelings can make a meaningful difference.

Remember, no child should have to grieve alone 🧡

Have you heard about Lionheart's Youth Grief Advisory Committee? 🧡

This unique group brings together young people with lived experience of grief to help shape the future of support for children and teenagers in WA after the death of an Important Person.

Members share their ideas, insights and experiences to help ensure the voices of grieving young people are heard.

We're hosting an information session this Tuesday evening and there's still time to register!

If you know a young person who is passionate about making a difference and supporting others through their lived experience, we'd love to connect. Reach out to [email protected] or contact us on 0481 199 758 to discuss.

We're developing our advisory committee, because young people aren't just the future; their voices matter now 🦁🧡

The countdown is on! 🧡

Earlier today, our team came together online to prepare for next weekend's Returning Families Camp, and to say we're excited would be an understatement!

We've been planning activities, conversations, family experiences and all the little details that help make camp such a special opportunity for connection, learning and fun.

To all the families joining us next weekend, we can't wait to see you. We are so looking forward to spending time together and welcoming you back to the Lionheart community 🦁

Our June Returning Families Camp is full, but there are still plenty of opportunities to connect with Lionheart throughout the rest of the year.

From our September Returning Families Camp, to Support Groups, Counselling, DRUMBEAT and more, we're excited to continue walking alongside children and families after the death of an Important Person.

See you soon, camp friends! 🧡

One of the questions grieving children often ask is: "Will that happen to me too?"

After the death of an Important Person, children can become worried about their own safety, health, or the wellbeing of the people they love.

These questions are a normal part of grief.

Children are often trying to make sense of what has happened and understand whether it could happen again.

Sometimes the most helpful thing we can do is create space for their questions and answer them honestly, using age appropriate language.

What questions have you heard children ask about grief, death or dying?

When families first come to Lionheart, they often worry about whether their child will join in, make friends, or feel comfortable.

What we hear time and time again is that children and teens remember something much bigger than the activities.

They remember feeling understood.
They remember meeting other children who "get it".
They remember feeling less alone.

Connection can be a powerful part of the grief journey after the death of an Important Person 🧡

Young people with lived experience of grief have so much wisdom to share 🧡

Lionheart’s Youth Grief Advisory Committee brings together young people aged 12-17 who have experienced the death of an Important Person in their family to help shape the future of grief support for children and teens.

We are excited to launch our Youth Grief Advisory Committee this August, and we're finalising our inaugural committee members. We warmly welcome young people (and their grown up) to join us to learn more at our upcoming information session on Tuesday 9th June via Zoom.

If you'd like to join the information session to learn more, or if your teen might like to be part of the committee, please contact Laura or Emma via [email protected]. We'd love to hear from you!

🎧 Podcast recommendation 🎧

“Good Mourning” is an Australian podcast exploring grief, loss and what it means to keep living after someone dies.

Through honest conversations, personal stories and expert insights, it reminds grieving people that they are not alone in what they are carrying 🧡

Our Term 2 Support Groups have nearly finished! 🧡

With only one session left for this term, we're now accepting registrations for our group in Term 3!

For many grieving children, one of the hardest parts of grief is feeling like no one else understands what life feels like now.

Our support groups create a space where young people can connect with others who “get it”. A place to share stories, explore emotions, build coping tools and feel less alone in their grief.

Through activities, conversations and connection (and making some meaningful mess!), children are reminded that their grief matters and that they do not have to carry it on their own 🦁

We are so grateful to walk alongside the incredible children, young people and families in our Lionheart community this term.

If you would like to learn more about our support groups or grief support services, please get in touch and register through our website or send us a DM.

It’s not too late to join us for our next New Families Camp 🧡

For families navigating life after the death of an Important Person, camp offers a space to connect, reflect, learn and feel supported alongside others who understand grief.

Many families arrive unsure of what to expect. What they often leave with is connection, hope and the reminder that they do not have to do this alone 🦁

Our team is ready to warmly welcome new families into the Lionheart community this July or October.

If you’ve been considering support for your family, we would love to hear from you. Reach out via our website or send us a DM to learn more.
