πŸ’š FOOD FOR THOUGHT FRIDAY

Good food doesn't just fill bellies. It builds stronger, kinder communities.

A box of rescued food might look like vegetables, bread and a few pantry staples.

But sometimes it's also breathing room.

It's one less expense when the budget is already stretched.

It's fresh food that might otherwise have gone without.

It's knowing there is a community around you when life gets unexpectedly difficult.

And every time good food is rescued instead of wasted, something else happens too.

Volunteers connect.
Businesses contribute.
Common
And perfectly good food gets to fulfil the purpose it was intended for.

Good food. Stronger people. Brighter tomorrows.

That's something worth thinking about this Friday. πŸ’š

Because good food should nourish people β€” not landfill.

πŸ’š THANKFUL THURSDAY β€” THE HEAVY LIFTING

There is a side of food relief that doesn't always make it into the photos.

The lifting.

Crates into cars.
Boxes out of cars.
Produce onto tables.
Leftovers packed away.
Then sometimes doing the whole thing again at the next collection.

Some boxes are light.

And some contain 30 kilograms of potatoes and make you question every decision that led you to this particular moment. πŸ₯”πŸ˜‚

Today we're thankful for the volunteers across Wider Communities who quite literally help carry the load.

The people who collect, lift, load, unload, sort, set up and pack down week after week so rescued food can make its way into the community.

It's physical work. It's often unseen work.

And without those hands, the food simply wouldn't get where it needs to go.

So today, we're celebrating the heavy lifters β€” and perhaps gently suggesting that 30 kg of potatoes is quite sufficient in one bloody box. πŸ˜‚πŸ’š

Because good food should nourish people β€” not landfill.

πŸ’š WISDOMOUS WEDNESDAY

TAKE WHAT YOU NEED. LEAVE ENOUGH FOR THE NEXT PERSON.

Food relief works best when we remember that community doesn't end with the person standing in front of us.

At a community pantry, there may be plenty on the table when you arrive β€” but there are also people coming after you.

A second family.

An older person living alone.

Someone finishing work who can't get there until later.

A parent doing the school run before they can make it in.

That's why one of the simplest acts of community care is also one of the easiest:

Take what you need β€” and remember the person coming after you. πŸ’š

It isn't about going without.

It isn't about deciding who deserves what.

And it certainly isn't about judgement.

It's simply about giving everyone who comes through the pantry the opportunity to find something useful for their household too.

Because community food relief works when we think not only about β€œWhat do I need?”

…but also:

β€œWho might be coming after me?”

That's community looking after community. πŸ’š

Because good food should nourish people β€” not landfill.

πŸ’š DID YOU KNOW TUESDAY?

Food rescue doesn't begin at the pantry.

By the time rescued food reaches a pantry table, it's already been on quite a journey.

Someone has coordinated the collection.

A volunteer has driven to the store.

Crates have been loaded into a vehicle.

The food has been transported, unloaded, checked, sorted and prepared for distribution.

Sometimes it's moved between volunteers or locations to get it where it's needed most.

And then, finally, it reaches the pantry.

Most of that happens quietly, behind the scenes β€” often before the people receiving the food ever arrive.

πŸš— That's why our volunteers aren't just giving their time.

They're using their own cars.
Loading and unloading crates.
Travelling kilometres across our communities.
And working together to keep rescued food moving.

Food rescue is a chain β€” and every link matters.

Next time you see a table filled with rescued produce, bread and groceries, remember there was a whole team of people behind getting it there. πŸ’š

Because good food should nourish people β€” not landfill.

CEO Report – August 2026

August has been another busy and rewarding month for Wider Communities Food Relief Inc, with 26,020 worth of food collected and distributed, which is an increase from July’s 24,756. It is wonderful to see our numbers continuing to grow as we work to support our community.

I would like to sincerely thank all of our amazing volunteers for the wonderful work they continue to do. Their dedication and commitment help me keep Pita’s legacy and his Charity moving forward, and I am incredibly grateful for every one of them.

Whenever I can, I make time to visit some of our volunteers each fortnight to check in and see how everyone is going. Our volunteers are the heart of what we do.

A huge thank you also goes to our supporting stores and their staff for their ongoing generosity and support.

I would especially like to acknowledge my 2IC, Stephanie Bailey, for always having my back; Amandah-Kayte Lead, who started the Friends of Wider Communities Food Relief page; Kori Vianna Segon, for her fantastic technical abilities; and everyone else who continues to contribute their time, skills and support.

Together, we continue to honour Pita’s legacy by helping those in need in our community. ❀️

πŸ’š MONDAY MOTIVATION β€” IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE BIG

When we think about making a difference, it's easy to imagine it has to be something enormous.

It doesn't.

One person gives an hour of their time.

Someone else makes room in their car for another collection.

A business donates something it can spare.

A volunteer picks up a crate of food that might otherwise have been wasted.

Someone shares a post and introduces Wider Communities to a person who had never heard of us before.

None of those things seems particularly enormous on its own.

But community isn't built from one enormous act. It's built from hundreds of small ones.

One crate joins another.

One volunteer joins another.

One act of generosity makes the next one possible.

And somewhere at the other end of that chain is a person or family whose week just became a little easier.

So our Monday motivation is simple:

Don't underestimate the little bit you can do.

Because when enough people each do their little bit, it becomes something pretty bloody remarkable. πŸ’š

Because good food should nourish people β€” not landfill.

πŸ’š FOOD FOR THOUGHT FRIDAY

Sometimes food relief isn't about having nothing.
Sometimes it's about not having enough.

The rent is paid.
The electricity bill is paid.
Fuel has gone in the car so you can get to work.

And then you look at what's left for groceries.

For many people experiencing financial pressure, hardship doesn't necessarily look the way we imagine it does.

It can be a working family whose budget simply won't stretch far enough this week.

A pensioner choosing which bill gets paid first.

A parent making sure the kids eat before they do.

Someone hit with an unexpected expense that turned an already-tight fortnight upside down.

That's why community food relief matters.

Sometimes a bag of fresh produce, bread and pantry staples doesn't just provide food.

It creates breathing room.

A little money left for petrol.
A prescription that can be collected.
A bill that doesn't have to wait.
One less thing to worry about this week.

There should be no judgement attached to needing a hand.

Life changes quickly.

And sometimes the difference between coping and not coping can be surprisingly small.

πŸ’š Food for thought this Friday: a little support at the right time can make a much bigger difference than we ever see.

Because good food should nourish people β€” not landfill.

πŸ’š THANKFUL THURSDAY β€” THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE PANTRIES

Today we're not thanking just one person β€” we're celebrating the people who make Wider Communities what it is.

πŸ’š OUR QUIET ACHIEVERS

Not everyone who helps Wider Communities Food Relief has their name on a post.

Some collect food before most of us have finished our first coffee.

Some load their own cars, drive from one collection to another, unload it all β€” and then turn around and set up a pantry.

Some fill in when another volunteer can't make it.

Some answer messages, record statistics, sort boxes, clean tables, pack food and quietly get on with whatever needs doing.

And many do it week after week without expecting recognition.

So this Thankful Thursday isn't about one person.

It's about all of them.

To every Wider Communities volunteer working quietly behind the scenes β€” whether you collect, sort, transport, distribute, organise or simply step in when somebody needs a hand:

Thank you.

Wider Communities isn't one person, one pantry or one collection.

It's a network of people choosing to give a little of their time so somebody else has a little more on their table.

And today, we think that's worth celebrating. πŸ’š

Because good food should nourish people β€” not landfill.

πŸ’š WHACKY WEDNESDAY β€” THE GREAT VEGGIE BEAUTY PAGEANT

Wonky. Weird. A little bit questionable. Still perfectly good food. πŸ˜‚πŸ₯•

Not every piece of rescued produce arrives ready for its supermarket glamour shot.

Some carrots have legs.
Some potatoes appear to have developed personalities.
Some capsicums look mildly offended by life.
And occasionally a zucchini arrives that really shouldn't be discussed on a family-friendly page. πŸ‘€πŸ˜‚

But here's today's little bit of Wednesday wisdom:

Food doesn't have to be pretty to be good food.

A bent carrot still makes soup.
An oddly shaped potato still makes brilliant mash.
A bruised apple can become crumble.
And that slightly ridiculous-looking capsicum still deserves dinner β€” not landfill.

At Wider Communities Food Relief, we're much more interested in whether food is good to eat than whether it would win Miss Vegetable 2026.

So today we're celebrating the wonky, weird and wonderfully edible.

πŸ₯•πŸŽπŸ₯” What's the strangest-shaped fruit or vegetable you've ever brought home? Bonus points if you thought it looked like something it absolutely shouldn't have. πŸ˜‚

Because good food should nourish people β€” not landfill. πŸ’š

πŸ’š TUESDAY TRUTH β€” FOOD RESCUE ISN'T JUST ABOUT FOOD

When we rescue food, the obvious win is that perfectly good food gets to someone who can use it.

But the impact goes further than that.

πŸ₯• Good food stays out of landfill.
πŸš— Volunteers connect communities.
πŸ’š Families get a little breathing room in their weekly budget.
🀝 Local businesses can turn surplus into support.
🌏 Something that might have become waste becomes a resource instead.

And perhaps the biggest thing?

Food rescue reminds us that there is often enough to go around β€” we just need better ways of getting it where it needs to be.

Every collection.
Every crate.
Every volunteer.
Every pantry.

It all adds up.

At Wider Communities Food Relief, we're proud to be one small part of keeping the good moving throughout our community.

Because good food should nourish people β€” not landfill.
