We recently visited the office of Senator Jordon Steele-John, Senator for Western Australia and spokesperson for Disability Inclusion and the NDIS, Health and Mental Health, and Youth.
This was an important opportunity to speak about the experiences of people with disability from African, refugee, migrant and culturally diverse communities.
Too often, these voices are still missing from national disability conversations, policy discussions and leadership spaces.
People in our communities may experience disability alongside cultural stigma, racism, language barriers, migration challenges, isolation and difficulty navigating services. These are not separate issues. They shape how people experience disability, whether they ask for help and whether systems respond in ways that feel safe and respectful.
As at March 2026, there were 67,501 active CALD participants in the NDIS. Behind that number are individuals, carers and families whose experiences must be better reflected in policy, advocacy and reform.
Through Amani Circle and Daring Different Global, we are creating culturally safe spaces where people can connect, find support, build confidence and have their lived experience recognised as knowledge.
We spoke about stronger representation, opportunities to contribute to parliamentary and policy discussions, and clearer leadership pathways for CALD people with disability.
Our communities should not only be consulted. We should be present, recognised and supported to lead.
