We humbly pay our respects to the Wadjuk, Ngarluma and Karriyarra people on whose land we train, live and play. Steve Hanson, Jahna Cedar and Ratehi Hirini came together in 2021 to create Gur Wirimalpa as an avenue to honour our ancestors through creating a safe space for strong men to not only lead healthy lifestyles through sport, but share culture and language. Our training sessions incorporate culture days where song, dance, stories and art are shared amongst the team. The team is based on the principle of acknowledging where we have come from, sharing culture through generations and embracing opportunities. The name Gur Wirimalpa comes from both the Torres Strait – Eastern Islands language group and Nyiyaparli languages. Gur meaning ‘Saltwater” in Meriam Mir and Wirimalpa meaning “Warrior” in Nyiyaparli. It celebrates the two first nations people of Australia, coming together from the land and sea to celebrate the worlds oldest living culture and honouring the dreamtime spiritual journey of our ancestors. Steve was raised in Gordonvale but has family connections to Ugar (Stephen) Island in the Torres Strait. Jahna was raised in Marble Bar and South Hedland, and Ratehi in South Hedland, Karratha and Broome. We look forward to growing our club, to include a women’s and youth team in the future.
