A Year 6 girl once left me a note. Part of it read that she feels safe and appreciated, that she can share whatever is on her mind, and "thank you for making me feel loved, even when I can't love myself."

That is why I do this. So many kids feel invisible, as if they do not matter. So for every child I see, I light up when I greet them, I learn their name, and I make sure they know they belong.

Today is the last day of the financial year. If chaplaincy like this matters to you, this is the moment your gift goes furthest.

As a business chaplain in the Hawkesbury, I am always connecting people, organisations and opportunities. Two weeks ago, after 18 months of groundwork, I ran the first ever Hawkesbury Chaplain Round Up, bringing together chaplains from schools, community services, RFS, police, ambulance, the courthouse and disaster recovery.

Twenty seven gathered over breakfast, and the mayor came to back the work. Out of it, a Hawkesbury Chaplain Network is forming, with three chaplains already stepping up to lead.

Chaplaincy is strongest when it works together.

A big part of chaplaincy is holding space. It means creating somewhere students, teachers and parents can think out loud without judgment. It takes patience, and a willingness to step into life's storms with people.

This year I walked alongside a student facing a serious health diagnosis, simply being there as they processed their fears, their questions, and their hopes.

In an unpredictable world, sometimes the most powerful thing you can offer is to stay.

- Mat Martin, Hobartville Public School and Richmond High School

Your EOFY gift keeps someone in the building who can hold that space when life gets heavy.

This year I helped restart our multicultural morning teas, with nearly 40 parents at the first one. Afterwards, a mum told me she wanted a career now that her kids were at school, but she felt dismissed and unsure where to start. Seeing her creativity, I pointed her toward some media study pathways. With tears in her eyes she said, "At least right now, I do not feel worthless."

I have also walked with adults in our community through some of their darkest moments.

Sometimes people do not need solutions. A single word of affirmation can change everything.

A boy's parents asked if I could help with how hard he is on himself. He loves sport and wants to win, but a loss or a mistake, even in a lunchtime game of handball, cuts deep.

We have been working on a simple, freeing idea. His worth is not his scoreline. It is his character, and how he treats the people around him.

Kids carry lessons like this far beyond the playground.

I run a drumming program, and one game has a child dance in the middle while everyone else drums their rhythm. I invited a girl to take a turn. She shook her head. Back in Kindy, someone had teased her about how she danced, and she had never wanted to dance since.

Before I could respond, a Year 1 boy spoke up, "We can help you. If you dance now, we will cheer for you, and you can rewrite your story."

She did not get up that day, but watching a six year old speak that kind of truth over a friend was unforgettable.

One morning I popped next door to the IGA for milk. I spotted the parent of a former student and asked how he was. He melted into my arms. He was not doing well, and he was not sure he could keep going.

We sat outside and talked. I listened. I told him that while I had only come out for milk, perhaps I was there at the right moment for a reason. We have since found support for his mental health, and I check in with him every week.

Being present in a community means you are there when it matters most.

Two sisters were struggling with anxiety and often felt unsettled at school. In our wellbeing sessions we worked on simple, practical tools such as breathing, positive self talk, journalling, and quiet moments to reset.

A few days later they found me and said, "We are feeling good and peaceful now."

From worry to calm, and from tension to peace. Sometimes that shift starts with one caring adult and a few practical tools.
